Don't know if anyone watched it the other night. But several ex players lost a lot of money through alleged fraud. Millions in some cases but I seem to remember it happened to other sports people but this was trying to avoid paying tax. One born every minute they say.
Unbelievable, footballers can't be so dim to put their money into funds unknown to them surely. Bet John Stones isn't one of these ,clever lad invested in property. Safer bet than edge funds
People will just say its stupid/greedy footballers, but they were duped like anyone else can be, Howard Wilkinson has a lot to answer for thats for sure. Met police did a terrible job of prosecuting these fraudsters, and football clubs should be giving their employees protection against these vultures, not unbelievably allowing them into the dressing rooms and training grounds to pray on them. On top of that what came across was just how much HMRC are absolute vile lovely persons. prepared to bankrupt people, every year for 40 years, who are victims of fraud.
I may be completely wrong here, so happy to be corrected. But weren't these "investments" a way of reducing their tax liabilities to start with? Where as your average Joe on PAYE are taxed at source....
Footballers would also be taxed at source on PAYE. But like many richer people, they invest in property, stocks, shares, etc. and have other income that they have to pay tax on profits independently - and, as it appears, they try to avoid paying tax on it.
I also payed full wack into works share savings schemes to avoid paying tax too, sometimes it payed off and sometimes it didn't.
Think Murphy lost around 5 million! Need to look at what Fowler did - built up a property empire. Think he owns half of Burnley!
I was advised to invest my redundancy money in unit trusts in the 90s. Lost a bit ,but more fool me ,I dont see this making headlines.
Missus’ son did similar. Has 20 something properties in Yorkshire. It’s who you trust and surround yourself with I guess. Very easy I imagine to be lured in by the wrong types when young and loaded.
That's not the end of it for Murphy. Wait until he gets my carpet cleaning bill for removal of the stains caused by my heart bleeding.
Didn't Fowler own most of Moss Side too? I remember when he signed for Man City they used to sing "We all live in a Robbie Fowler home"
Good article here about the program: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-...s-financial-shame-the-story-of-the-v11-review
Gary Neville owns a chunk of central Manchester. Last I saw, he was looking to build the biggest building in the city. He started at 21, and had to hide what he was doing from Ferguson...!
The investment firm that was at the centre of this was recommended by the LMA and PFA I believe. They made some decent investments, but then some investments they fraudulently forged signatures on. It's not just bad judgement, it's downright illegality.
Was the evidence of forged signatures proven and I dont mean by the person saying thats not my signature?
A member of staff said they witnessed it happening and a handwriting expert also provided evidence that they were forged, and if you see one of them in the program the difference is so laughable that anyone can tell the person who signed one document didn't sign the other.
