If "squad numbers" is the name of one of our right backs we'll probably release them

Don't we have to release them before the start of the season? I think there are rules about swapping numbers during the season.

Will probably be telling if any numbers are left open

Fairly certain that's the case in the premier league. No idea if it's different in the EFL mind.

Numbers are submitted to the EFL before the start of the season. It became quite common for us - in my time at least - to announce the day before game one.

But proper player registration and squad number finalisation is submitted at the close of each transfer window.

They were wearing the numbers in training and signed with them yesterday.

    Vickers is 7 I asked. Shepherd 5. Cooper 1. Phillips 8.

I find it a bit strange that some players (and fans) seem eager to have a number of 1 to 11 as if it’s indicative of being “first choice “ whilst others are content with the number they were allocated on their arrival at the club (like Luca with 48).
Is the number still so important anymore?
And don’t get me started on the “retirement” of certain numbers for any reason.
