The official site lists 22 outfield players in the first team squad.

However, Lofthouse has now gone, Gent and Jalo have long term injuries, and Ogbeta cannot play against his parent club.

Dallas and Lopata have not featured in the squad of any of the preseason friendlies, so I reckon you can count these two out. Same goes for Nwakali, who may or may not have returned to the club. If he has then either he's not yet fit or Conor doesn't rate him, or both. But there's no evidence he's even here. Either way, he won't be playing.

That takes us down to 15 players, not quite enough for 10 starters and 6 outfield subs.

There are also question marks over the fitness of Connell and Earl who have missed preseason games.

    Take your pick from

    Defenders
    Roberts, de Gevigney, Barratt, Shepherd

    Midfield
    Russell, Phillips, Bland, Keillor-Dunn, Yoganathan

    Forwards
    Farrugia, Cleary, McGoldrick, Vickers

    Possible
    Connell, Earl

A couple of injuries in training and we might be struggling to put out a team. Let's hope there's signings lined up.

I would say I am a half glass full kind of Barnsley fan (some could say “happy clapper”) but it is crazy that all the time we have had to prepare for the first game of the season and we find ourselves in this position.

I would always rather wait a little bit and get the right player in than rush and sign the wrong player but it’s been known since what April that under Hourihane we would need some full backs and yet here we are going into match day 1 with no actual right back, 1 injured left back and an ineligible left back.

Let’s hope it’s a busy week of transfers and we can at least bring in a right back.

Terrible state of affairs for season KO. Can’t say I’m surprised though. Not one natural full back, left or right, to pick from right now.

Been the same the last couple of seasons, I'm not sure why people are surprised about the situation were in.

I'm sure Sormaz will be telling Neerav he's doing a cracking job and alls going to plan, still a top 4 squad on less wages.

Its the definition of 'early' that Sormaz can use as a get-out clause

But always remember, be careful what you wish for ehh!!. :D
Yeah they keep doing this to us and I don't think we should be surprised anymore.
Disappointed and fed up of course, but not surprised.
And that bit about us signing some bargain bucket players who nobody else wants, at the end of August, might be near to the truth actually.

Not the left back we've signed on loan?

Not unknown to have players covering positions whilst you're trying to rebalanced the squad is it - I'd be pretty sound with MDG being right back in a 4.

I’m not happy with MDG anywhere across a back 4 (or 5 tbh).

We probably haven't realised it's a thing anyway. I fully expect to see him in the starting line up.

That must be up there challenging for top spot with the Sheffield Wednesday will be in the UCL within 5 years quotes for delusion.
So you can see MDG getting up the pitch in am attacking sense then putting the burners on to get back, dear lord

Yeah, like he did pretty regularly when asked to support the RWB all last season.

He'd be playing right back. Its not unheard of to have centre backs playing there out of necessity.

Added to Connors superior work ethic and meticulous attention to detail what could possibly go wrong in being prepared for our first game ?

It'd just highlight his weaknesses even more imo. Hes slow and awful at defending long balls behind him, all this would do is make him look even worse
