Fairly weird 70's early metal band, best known for bassist Lemmy (the late) who went on to form Motorhead (Ace Of Spades, etc).

A lot of their songs are about the sci fi & fantasy books written by Michael Moorcock.. mostly his eternal champion series but they have collaborated for half a century now

I think the official term was "space rock", but more like "spaced out rock" looking at the state of them in this video for Silver Machine.:D

Long before your time Zoe! I saw them through the windows of a York University building some time in 1972 when I was a young airman stationed at RAF Linton on Ouse a few miles away. I couldn’t get a ticket but went along to see if I could pay at the door. Watching them through the open windows wasn’t great but it was free so all good. I was so impressed with them that I bought their new album shortly after - “Doremi Fasol Latido”.

Hawkwind were fantastic back in the 70s. I saw them at Newcastle City Hall, the loudest band ever. The music is a bit Prog Rock with a bit of heavy metal and jazz thrown in. Their original lineup included Lemi (Motorhead) on bass and he sang on their most famous song "Silver Machine". They were also famous for Staci, a lass that danced topless on stage, I wouldn't think she'll be doing it now though :eek:

It was 74/5 when I saw them and my abiding memory (apart from the admirably boobed Stacia) is of a nutter who ran down the front and stuck his head in one of the huge speakers on the stage and stayed there for the whole gig. He can't have seen much and is probably now completely stone deaf.... Me and my mates were sat in the very back row of the stalls and escaped with only minor ear damage.

Edit, just looked it up and the gig was 12th December 1974.

I blame seeing acts like this (Deep purple, Uriah Heep etc) for my life-long tinnitus. Who knew that being a few feet from a stage might do some hearing damage??o_O

Saw them in Liverpool in 1982 Choose your Masques Tour, Not one of my favourite gigs to be honest, the support was dire and not right for a Hawkwind audience a tuneless heavy metal band with no stage presence, they got booed off and had stuff thrown at them from the crowd. Hawkwind themselves were fine and their set and special effects imoressive for the time, but they didnt play Silver Machine not even in the encore which was disappointing

I've been doing a few of the dinosaurs recently - saw Focus Robert Plant and Roger Waters last year and just bought tickets to see Jethro Tull next spring. Id pay a fiver to see Hawkwind again but not trecking all the way to Leeds

I need to know if they’re pronounced Hawkwind (as in winding up a hawk) or Hawkwind as in a hawk with gas.

Without being pedantic, I don’t think Stacia danced topless but managed to put them on display nevertheless.

I’d be happy to chuck a fiver at it except it says standing only. That’s not for me I’m afraid :(
