Just watched Oster's goal for the first time it was a beauty only thing that could have made it better would have been a cut away shot to Mark McGee's face as it curled in to the far corner.
Of all my memories of that season, one landmark was our home victory against Sheffield United in early March. They were still in the hunt at the top and looking to avenge their earlier home loss. In particular I recall walking up Belrave Road after the game and thinking that I had hitherto never heard the Barnsley fans so animated and excited as they were that evening Whilst we were in with a real shout of promotion from the start of season I think that was when I realised to myself “yes, this is going to happen”
I just missed out on the promotion and Premier League seasons, went to my first game in 98/99. But brilliant to read the memories of those on here who were there for those halcyon seasons.
It was sort of in my mind after hearing Super Johnny had scored a late winner at Sheffield United on the radio, whilst I was on Berwick Street in Soho, doing my Christmas shopping. But I didn’t really believe it till Wolves blew it at Grimsby. John Oster must be the first player we’ve ever signed who was already a club legend! I was one of only 2 people in my group of mates who had no nerves prior to the Bradford game. I knew we were going up that day.
There was something special right from the off that year. We were just playing amazing football and most teams could only out muscle us, rather than out play us (Wolves for example). I'd had a season ticket for a few years by then, just me and my dad. He was a Primary School teacher in Doncaster and used to pay to take a couple of kids to the games as it was a really deprived area... East Stand, upper tier, gangway 13, Row BB seats 188 and 189, with other seats dotted nearby. The club also used to give free tickets to local schools which helped fill up the ground. I remember it rocking before kickoff with everyone throwing ripped up pieces of newspaper as the teams walked out. . These days I sit in the West Lower with my lad, daughter and step lad. We like to appreciate the speed of the game which is much clearer at eye level.
Watson Davis De Zeeuw Moses Eaden Redfearn Sheridan Thompson Bullock Wilkinson Hendrie also Jones Shirtliff Appleby Bosancic Marcelle Liddell Basically a full league season using mainly just those mentioned.
For me, Bolton away. They were considered the best team in the league. They felt that way too. We went there and were the better side, comfortably, only conceding a late equaliser to a fluke miss kick. The way their players and fans celebrated a point at home to us was something I wasn’t expecting. We had a lot of highs and impressive displays, but we didn’t always capitalise. I actually think on our respective days, we were better than Bolton. Despite thinking we could do it for a long period, I thought we’d thrown it away at Portsmouth. A very long trip back north. Even during the Bradford game, it looked like we might not get over the line and thank the lord for Sundgot!
My first game that season was QPR at home after 5 straight wins. Needless to say.... They beat us 3 times that season (2 league and FA Cup), talk about bogey team.
We earned a good point away at C.Palace, but didn't we lose Matty Appleby that day to a bad injury. Then came the visit to Portsmouth, 3-0 down and then we pulled two goals back. And then it said on radio Sheff, there's yet another goal at Fratton park, have Barnsley got an equaliser ?!!.
