Not having all the hate for OHMSS. Lazenby was terrible, I'll grant you - a catalogue model thrown into a film acting role - but the film is my absolute favourite of the series. Had any of the other Bond actors taken it on, it would stand up there as peak 007. Much like Diana Rigg, I will die on that hill. Oh, and no theme song, just a John Barry instrumental. Check out the Propellerheads remix - it'll blow your system.
The wife thought the same when we watched it a few weeks ago. Strange. There were a few films before Lazenby got his one shot.
I hated Licence to Kill when I first saw it, it's grown on me loads since. Never been a fan of the Living Daylights though. That particular era I find quite dull. For Your Eyes Only is another one.
"Quintessential Englishman" In the early books Fleming didn't elaborate, but he later wrote him as being born of a Scottish father and Swiss mother, schooling at Fettes College in Edinburgh, his family home being in Glencoe.
The books are far better than the films....but I agree the best film is OHMSS. Edit... best film of the 60's/70's/80's at least.
I've never really understood the love for James bond. Always found them to be extremely cheesy and almost like they were all supposed to be piss takes of the spy genre because of how badly acted and scripted they were.
That's the appeal to me. I got into them when I was probably about 9 or 10. I think we watched the World is Not Enough on a school trip to the Millennium Dome. The plot wasn't thick enough that I couldn't understand it and the good guy triumphed against all odds. I think that's why it took me a bit longer to enjoy the Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig ones, because they were a bit darker and more of a departure from a traditional Bond Film.
I get that for kids. But i don't understand how there are millions of adults who think it's the best film series ever. Doesn't bother me because I think if a film makes someone smile then it's done the job intended for that person and that's all that matters but I personally don't get it. For me the story has to be the main part of the film and any action or gore or comedy or whatever has to be secondary to the plot or I can't get into them. I liked the first fast and furious because it was focused more on the story, first final destination and first saw too. The gore was secondary to the story. Then all three series seemed to shift and focus on action, shock and gore at the expense of many real story telling. It's how I see bond. A couple of hours of "oh look at this ridiculously unrealistic gadget" and "let's see what stupid way to try and fail to kill bond we can come up with" at the expense of a fleshed out story. But hey if people love it then good for them
