People don't seem to care about shop lifting anymore - last few times I've been through Leeds I've seen people stealing from shops - especially the bus station. They aren't bothered if security stops them.

I think Daniel Hannan is a demonstrable fùckwit and if the UK is turning into a "third world" country, he's played a large part by cheerleading for Brexit and the shitshow Tory governments that followed.

Re shoplifting. I've seen A couple of times over the last fortnight or so. Mapplewell co-op.
    1st 2 young uns (12ish) . Ran like heck.
2nd A bloke about 60 looked smartly dressed. Walking away, through the car park. And over the road. I thought the lady from the staff was shouting to him from the doorway. that he'd forgot summat tbh. But acting totally oblivious. Only when I got inside. She said he'd shoplifted.
Is using food banks more embarrassing than getting caught shoplifting..

Shoplifting hasn't suddenly got dramatically worse since covid, it's been a pandemic for 15 years or more, no one especially the police have been taking any notice.
What did change, or rather become apparent, during covid was the number of outwardly civilised folk who began exhibiting the base behaviour of the career shoplifter and worse.
The threats of violence over an extra tin of peas, from those who had seemed normal. The desire to find krypton factor methods of deviating from the rules of not shopping enmasse during lockdown and then the promise they'd be back at closing time to beat up the staff who'd spoilt their venture.
The majority of shoppers, it may have been a small one, but a majority of customers it was, during covid were absolute.....was gonna say animals, but that would be unfair on every other species.......an embarrassment to themselves.
Don't know what it is, a breakdown in societies respect for each other, that wasn't there when I grew up and I grew up through Maggie and the strike.
After a lifetime of retail, I couldn't get out quick enough, don't really like people.

Britain has been in decline for decades in numerous ways. If we want to pin the blame for a lot of the decline a suitable and appropriate person would be Thatcher and her neo-liberal capitalistic view of the state and her belief that we should all be rugged individuals. Lack of investment, privatisation and a deliberate policy to shift wealth away from the poorest to those at the top have been key policies that have undermined social cohesion and a sense of community. In my opinion of course.
