Since June began just 9 days ago enough men have taken their own life to fill every single usable seat in Oakwell.

    Every. Single. Seat.

    Think about that.

Talk to your friends. Ask them how they are.

    Do you mean worldwide?

In 2023, 5656 suicides were registered in the England, 386 in Wales, 792 in Scotland and 221 in Northern Ireland.

And yes, talk to your friends - online and in the real world.

Biggest killer of men under 50 and one of the best for kids aged 10-19. Incredibly sad.

Having lived through a teenage son trying to take his own life I agree talk to someone.
But here in.lies the problem, getting professional help takes time and sometimes it's too late unless they get sectioned.

We've been to hell and back but now he's settled, got a job and got his driving test lined up. But the post is about talking to someone and that's what my lad didn't do. He self harmed as a release, both myself and his mum have had to save his life, cpr from the wife and I cut him down from a noose. We've had no support from anyone apart from each other and yesterday we had our Pearl Wedding Anniversary in Sorrento, our first proper summer holiday on our own in 30 years.

I read somewhere that more women attempt suicide than men, men are sadly just more successful. Of course we also know men are less likely to seek support too.
My workplace have put some great support in place, including paying for a counsellor to attend site for people who need support.

I hope this sort of thing becomes more common.

Surely that stat cant be true the suicide rate in men is almost 3x that of females or was a few years back.

Men are more likely to make "irreversible" attempts - jumping in front of a train or hanging themselves, while women are more likely to cut their wrists or take an overdose - which are generally recoverable.

Successful rates are higher, not attempts. Men choose more violent methods that tend to work.

I tried to find some stats to compare men and women and attempts but was unable to.

It is true in America, I've seen the stat they've mentioned mate. I can only assume but its probably more than likely the case over here too.

Fair enough mate. Although I don't think suicide rates are 3x higher in men just because they choose different methods to end it.

There are reasons for that. In many studies only unsuccessful attempts count as attempts which means that if you take away the half a million 'successful' suicides by men then the remaining figures show more women than men are attempting.
To put that in football terms, if Barnsley play Doncaster and win 10-0 but Barnsley only had 1 other shot on target while Donny had 3 shots on target but scored no goals then under this counting method it would show as Barnsley 1 attempt, Doncaster 3.

The second is that, again in many studies, self harm is considered 'suicical behaviour or a suicide attempt' and women are statistically more likely to self harm than men.

Then as jamdrop pointed out, men choose more fatal methods. While women are more likely to choose methods which take longer to work such as drug overdoses. There is a belief that it is because women are more likely to make a cry for help using these methods than men.

Either way it's horrendous that so many people suffer at all
