Yeah but they came in from leagues of similar or higher level to L1.

Nwakali had played loads of times in many European top leagues like Holland, Portugal etc. and even in top flight of Spain (I think) if not the 2nd tier there.

Lewis had played a lot of games in MLS which is on the whole, fairly similar level wise to L1. Some teams are a lot better than L1 now with the money spent (Miami) but many are around L1 level from what I have seen.

Clem was the only one to come from a much lower level. Ligue 2 itself has some good sides, but most of his career was in French lower levels.

We haven't taken advantage though of having an earlier than normal window whether it be paying a fee or free transfers.
Conor was appointed permanent Head Coach on 18th April, it's the first time in years we've started with a head coach in place and we haven't capitalised one jot.

Players return from their long holidays mid-June, usually. That goes for club staff too in many cases. We could have deals sewn up already, but until they’re in the building the announcements have to wait. I speak from experience on that.

But of course, that’s merely speculation regards the here and now. Maybe they’ve lost out to other clubs on numerous targets already and it’s a sh** show? We don’t know either way.

Ideally you’d do as much of your incoming business as early as possible. But that’s selfish thinking. The potential selling club may want to drag it out. For example, had Neerav taken up Coventry’s first offer for Kitch a couple of years ago, the club would have lost out on three times the fee.
I’ve no idea if we’re involved in anything of the sort right now. But there are more moving parts during a recruitment window than merely BFC and its wants and needs.

Regardless, no amount of rumination on here is going to alter the picture of our summer window. It’ll be painted by others and months down the line it’ll either look like a Rembrandt (summer 2022) or something more akin to me sh*tting on a piece of A4 paper (January 2025). No offence, Mlad.

I get that, but I reckon it's not through lack of effort. As YT says, most players are still on holiday (Stephen Humphrys has just jetted off on his 3rd of the summer), some players will be weighing up their options before making a decision. Again, Humphrys was out of contract all summer before signing for us.

Anyway, that wasn't the point of my post. I was replying to someone saying we'd not signed anyone before the transfer window shuts. The transfer window only applies to fee paying transfers, and I was merely pointing out that only Plymouth have paid a fee for a player in our league so far.

It's the same criteria for every club though Archie and clearly hasn't stopped some clubs, it's starting to feel like a recurring theme for us unfortunately, constantly using obstacles as an excuse.

I’m certain we will have talked to plenty of potential new players already but no decent player will jump straight in and accept our offer when he knows probably half of league one teams can offer him bigger money. We will have to manipulate the loan market much better this season because that’s one thing other clubs did much better than us.

Is it the case YT that players contract usually expire July 1st ?, I always thought that was the case with players coming to end of contract, might be wrong but if I am right then most of tranfers will happen after then I assume

Stevenage look like being next season's Wrexham with Houghton, Early and now Campbell already in. Where are they getting the money from? I think all three were on frees, but they will be paying above the normal league one salary.

Can’t see the comparison with Wrexham unless they’ve acquired a sqillionaire recently

That's only true if it's a completely level playing field, which it isn't. You can't force players to sign for you. We might have missed targets already, there's honestly no way of knowing. The targets we've identified might not be available yet, they might have said no, they might be mulling over other offers. As you say, there's been 30 completed transfers in the division, that's little over 1 per club on average. There's also 2 months until the season starts. There's no need to panic, yet.

Doesn't help the transfer window closing today until the 16th June. Those 8 days before training starts will be busy.

I wanted us to use this first part of the window to get a head start, I'm not panicking but we've wasted an opportunity to gain those small margins that sometimes make all the difference.
Other clubs with less resource than us seem capable of getting their ducks in a row, it was last minute.com last summer and the same in January.
