Creating chances hasn't been the issue for the majority of the season. I recall around the new year, between the home games with Wigan, Reading and the Cup game with Bristol Rovers, we had over 60 shots, but scored just twice iirc. We've had 13 shots in each of the games over the weekend and 18 in the win over Bolton. We even mustered 8 against Birmingham despite having 10 men the entire game. The quality of the chances at times has been lacking, though we have had games where we simply haven't taken our chances. Yesterday was a prime example. The more alarming stat is that we haven't kept a clean sheet for 13 games and just 6 all season. Only Shrewsbury have kept fewer. And I know I've banged this drum before, but when the clamour from our fans in January was for a striker (and we know how much our fans love a clamour), that to me was the secondary concern behind shoring up the defence. It's criminal that we still haven't adequately replaced the back 3 of Andersen, Kitching and Thomas.
Whilst I agree what you say it's not just down to the defence. Our midfield offers so little cover for the back line. There's only Connell who can actually tackle and he isn't the quickest. The rest (including wing backs) hardly ever track runners, it's no wonder we can't keep a clean sheet. Add in all the keeper errors too and it's just a mess.
Absolutely. We needed someone more consistent in that holding midfield role. Whilst not ideal as it's a loan, we did try to address the goalkeeping situation with Gauci, who I don't think looks a bad keeper, though has been unlucky with injuries. Though it's yet another position we're looking at strengthening again in the summer, for the 3rd consecutive summer.
