DKD won’t be a Barnsley player next season, he’s got some of the best stats in league 1 this season, & he’s at a club who are languishing in mid table & losing money at an alarming rate. There will be a bidding war, but I can’t see us getting much more than £2.5million for him. Phillips will also attract bids, & he’ll force a move if he doesn’t get one, that’s my feeling anyway. Russell might attract bids given his stats this season, I’d accept the first bid. There are a number of players out of contract also, & I wouldn’t try to keep any of them. It’s another major rebuild job for us in the summer.
I disagree. Interest doesn't have to come from up the pyramid. When we were relegated in 2018, we had a bit of a rebuild, letting a lot of the average players who were part of the relegated side go to other sides in our division. We didn't get millions for them, but we made a profit (Matty Pearson, Jason McCarthy etc). I don't think letting players go is necessarily the big issue, it's replacing them adequately that we've clearly struggled with since our last relegation.
I think his comments are more about managing expectations than suggesting wholesale sales. We can reduce our wage bill significantly anyway with out of contracts and players we let go to help with finances. I think Phillips will be a given to go and wouldn’t be surprised to see Connell go as well a few squad players. Like others have said we should be building round him. I also don’t think Conor would have taken the job knowing everything not nailed down is being sold. Just my opinion that could easily be wrong.
DKD will be sold, put your house on it. Might not be until 2 days before the season starts though - that’s the proper Barnsley way.
Can't see DKD being sold. He is the one to forge the team around next season and having 2 years left on his contract, think we have another year to get out of the division or lose him. Phillips, Connell, Earl would be my guess with plenty of fringe players being released. Smaller squad, hopefully focused more on quality and better use of academy players as backups would make financial sense. It has to happen otherwise the academy setup is pointless.
Selling DKD would be a big error. If the board want to actually build a team the best players who still have contract time left should be kept unless its crazy money offered. Get rid of out of contract players and cut losses on others to get them off the books. If DKD is sold the entire team is clearly weaker at this level and based on Sormaz' history there's a strong possibility that more dross will be brought in as replacement. If we had 4/5 really good players I could understand selling one, maybe two, for financial reasons. We've only got DKD really.....(some would argue Phillips). Having said that I fully expect DKD will be sold for short-term financial gain. Then we go back to struggling to compete and the owners putting more money in anyway because they have a squad of poor players soaking up over-inflated wages. Selling DKD would be like using the pumps on the Titanic-buys a bit of time but the ship continues to sink.
How else are we going to finance a rebuild? If we are even contemplating anywhere near top two next season, we need to be able to defend. So a brand new defence and goalkeeper is a must..if not then forget next season promotion wise before it starts..And that's just for starters. A couple midfielders who can graft and tackle. Plus at least one new striker.. all going to cost even if it's just wages. DKD is the only one at the club worth owt..
Don't forget we are probably shedding 3/4 high earners.Top players at other clubs may be at the end of their contract so could depend on what wages we offer and length of contract.Benson for example could be a revelation at another league one club if he stays fit.Sometimes you just have to shake things up.So to sum it up they could be quality out of contract players with no fee to pay ,but we need to act early.None of this pissing about until last few days in August. One other thing is if prospective players see who we have already signed may persuade them to put pen to paper.
People who are saying we need a new back line might be disappointed with most of them under contract except Mcarthy i honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see at least two of today’s back four starting our first game next season. Depressing thought i know.
And you think did will be happy to ply his trade in league 1 again. Get real he will be off and I don,t blame him.
Heard DKD having a house built in the north east…..rumour of Sunderland interest…..but he is from up there so who knows……hope he stays
