Do Barnsley goalkeepers not know they can use their hands?

One keeper sustains a serious enjury stretching out a leg to try and intercept a pot at goal, this goalkeeper makes it part of his routine. What's the point? Do the keeper training staff not coach keepers to use their outstretched hands gaining them feet of width to intercept? Beat me.............................. and Barnsley F.C. it would appear.

Flavell just isn't good enough new keeper needed next season. I know he's only young but scares the life out of me and looks like he had lead in his boots diving for those goals.

He’s had some good moments for us but also some poor ones. Young players are like that. He does seem to want to save with his feet a lot. Kinda like me when it’s my turn in the nets and I’m useless at it. De Gea saves with his feet a lot but it’s incredibly good at it. There was a few times today where the ball went by at glacial speeds, or so it seemed. Be interesting to see what Conor does on Monday. I would imagine he’ll keep him in the side as Gauci won’t be here next season.

I think he’ll be a good understudy for someone next season. As long as we don’t go through 50 keepers of course.

Is the keeper coach telling them to use legs ? Flavell is 6 4 ish and should have saved 3 of those.

For such a big lad he doesn't command his goal at all well. Shades of Lars Leese that.

For me, he isnt up to regular first team standard. Never got down to block some of those goals and doesn't command his area at all for a big lad.,let's hope Jackson is a bit better .

Personally; i find today's 'keepers inferior. They seem to lack that certain bit of hardness in a 50/50 and seem so week in aerial challenges.
Give me Southall, Coton, Schmeichel any day... not to mention Batch, Death etc

it’s the way they are taught now. They get taught to delay in one and ones and only attempt to get the ball if a player takes a heavy touch other than that it’s a k shape block. Most keepers are now rooted to their goal lines and too busy wrestling with an opposition player and one of their own and hoping the ref gives a foul on corners which the majority of the time they do so they don’t even attempt catching the ball majority of the time.

If they did know they could use their hands they would slap the defenders and strangle the midfielders.

You'd think 40 years in the Barnsley academy he'd be able to catch a ball wouldn't you..
I know 'sweeper-keeper' is the in thing these days, but they should be willing and able to use their hands as well.
I've got no dog in this fight, it makes no difference to me whether he's from Monk Bretton or Outer Mongolia.. if he's good enough he stays if not like hundreds before him he'll fall by the wayside.. It's entirely up to him.
I wished the academy produced more and better than it has done.. but its record is appalling.. for the money it costs.. Because every penny would/could go into first team building, it's simply a leach on the club's resources.
All this about "I want eleven of our home grown lads playing in the first team" is just idealistic nonsense.

Does anyone know how much the academy actually costs after the funding from the premier league is taken into account?

And when we talk about "the academy" are we talking about the physical structures that are used by our first team? Or simply the coaching costs for the kids?

Totally agree with you mate.I played in goal from junior school to playing in the army.If you stretch your leg for a shot it’s probably going to be 4ft from your body, dive for the ball and you’ve your full body length. To me it’s just a poor technique.Sorry I know he’s young and he will learn but just not ready at the moment.

I would think Gauci will be the first name on CHs Monday team sheet. Flavell shows potential but he’s only a baby in the goalkeeping world. Yesterday was a game too far for him.
By the way, does anyone know what’s happened to Flavell’s nemesis, Scott? It seems as if he’s been expunged from the bbs, but I could easily be wrong about that.

They are coached to use their feet the theory being you can react quicker with your feet on the ground than get down to use their arms(why strikers are taught to kick the ball close to a keepers legs when shooting on a one v one because they can’t get down quick enough).
Of course that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t dive when appropriate!

If we still had something to play for next season, I’d probably agree with Gauci but we don’t so I’m not sure there’s much point. He won’t be here after May, unless coming back on loan next season, so I think we’d be better giving our own player game time.

Vicious circle. First mistake Gauci makes it will be "should have stuck with Flav til end of season, at least he's ours own"

I think it would be wrong to expose Flavell anymore at this stage. It’s not helping him or indeed the rest of the defence to keep playing him particularly now there’s a more experienced alternative available.

Probably but I doubt such comments will bother Conor one iota

As you say, he's only young and been thrown in at the deep end. He's on a steep learning curve but I think he's doing OK.

He's had one good game and people made their minds up.he was good. He's decent with the ball at his feet. He's made clangers ever since almost cost us v Bolton when he dropped the ball on the corner. His positioning is poor, he doesn't command his box very well, shaky on crosses. I don't really care seasons over but if he's number one next season we have problems. I'd try get him a loan out.
