I don’t disagree with the idea. But it does not solve the industry. It needs more than just Nationalisation - there has to be a bigger plan to supplement it. Like I say - the specialist stuff ain’t an issue, the work is there. Is the general bulk stuff where cost plays the biggest part.
Could be wrong but didn't Maltby pit supply Monkton coke works which went to Scunthorpe, so the supply chain broke. New comers move on to a new estate at Royston and complain, fueled by ambulance chasing lawyers, about the smell and noise from the plant that had been there ages and effectively seal its fate
One of the biggest problems for British industries is the high price of energy compared to other Countries. The sooner the price of energy is decoupled from the price of gas as renewables take over the better.
Wath Main and Manvers coking plant were massive suppliers to Britain's blast furnaces for many decades. From the top of the road where we lived you could see the coking plant flame which burned off the carbon monoxide 24/7.
Problem is the ongoing investment in renewables to replace gas. Where does this come from. The argument currently is that increased prices are covering this investment. But agree, at some point, the price has to eventually come down.
A lot of military hardware nowadays is composite specialist metals, Kevlar, polymers and ceramics. I’m not sure what type of metal Scunthorpe produces? As an aside I find it quite ironic that one of the UK’s biggest weapons manufacturers is now owned by Rhinemetal who built weapons for the nazis.
