I hope the Government win the vote and nationalise steel production in Scunthorpe (to begin with). The state of the world at minute with Captain CooCoo Bananas in America and the nut job in Russia. We're going to need home grown production. Scary times. I look at the state of things and dread to think what the world will be like when George is an adult.
Logical conclusion. Even as a green party member, I would support a new mine as long as the coal is ONLY used for steel production.
Share holders in water companies should get a big fat **** all. Disgrace what they've done and asking for handouts. Should be a 75% tax on shares in utilities.
I’m not sure what Nationalisation will do. In some specialist works like at Rotherham and Sheffield, it would work - as there is the demand. But elsewhere, I’m not sure what the demand is like and how dear the products are. The industry is part failing because of cheap imported steel - unless the Government slap a tariff on it, I’m not sure what else privatisation can do. And even with a tariff, it pushes the prices of the steel up anyway for all of us. Tricky one - but I’m all for keeping the steel works going and being mighty again…..
It'll derisk a strategically critical resource at a time where we need to be focused on rearmourment & capital investment. No brainer.
I think you make a good point. But in an uncertain world it may be a good shout to retain something of big industries/utilities. Not to do so leaves the UK at the mercy of global headwinds. Anything UK at the moment I'd back as a defensive measure. Also, 'take back control' from foreign leeches sucking profits out of water, trains etc...
I'd potentially excuse them based on numbers, they wouldn't make a difference if they all banded together and voted as a bloc (for some reason). But you're right, it's about the principle of the issue - do they want to appear like they give a **** or not?
