    When did referees start running the current diagonal (northwest to southeast)?
    Just watched ref's v man city 1981 lg cup, and the officials ran the opposite diagonal.

    But it must have been standardised, since linesmen always run northeast and southwest lines. Makes positional training for refs easier if they operate in the same diagonal squares. Not that game though.
