From Pathe News. https://www.britishpathe.com/asset/189874/ I've never heard our record scorer Ernest Hine referred to as 'Chuck' before.
Fascinating. The West Stand and the old Spion Kop are still very recognisable in the footage. The building between them, where the player tunnel is located nowadays, intrigues me as it looks to be a fairly substantial one. Presumably part of Oakwell at the time, but I wonder if @Turvey Tyke (or anyone else) can provide any insight on it.
Great to see Beaumont Asquith, he later owned a grocery store on Doncaster Road, Kendray/Stairfoot. I used to do odd jobs for him like weighing spuds from the sacks into brown bags and bringing pop in from the outside store. Also used to walk his greyhound for him. Him and his former team mate Jack Arston or Hairston, were both big into greyhound racing. Jack had a newsagents on Doncaster road near to the east Dene club.
Brilliant. My Dad regularly went down to watch training with the team in the late 40s as his Dad used to work down the pit with Skinner Normanton and Tommy Taylor's Dad. I imagine it looked pretty much like this! Sadly he passed away last month, he'd have loved to have seen this.
Another thread where this comes up. https://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/one-for-the-oldies-on-here-1935-1936-season.317577/
I’m sure some of those buildings existed until the spion kop was seated, although I don’t remember the taller structure. I think they were for refreshments like the ones that used to back onto the old social club at the Ponty Rd end.
The seating was put in prior to the Premier League season. That section had been the original disabled supporters stand for several years before that (I think we were one of the first clubs to ever have one, IIRC).
Built in 1904 ish and housed the dressing rooms, showers etc. The current press room is part of that complex which up until 1995 housed the club Offices. I've got the architects plans somewhere showing the external spiral staircase.
I delivered newspapers for Jack and Betty Harston from 13 y o in 1960 til leaving school in 1963 wages were 15s a week which was pretty normal then
It was Jack Harston who had the newsagents on Doncaster Road and I delivered papers for him until we had a bit of a disagreement with him about low wages. I left shortly after and went to work for Mr Sutcliffe up Sheffield Road. Harston played left back for Barnsley but never had a good word to say about the club. He was a big Wednesday fan and often belittled me for supporting the Reds.
Hine started his career at Barnsley before moving to Leicester City ( where he won 6 England caps), Huddersfield, Manchester United, and back to Oakwell. He died in 1974.
He used to live round corner from us in Ward Green, always remember him being a reight nice old fella.
What a wonderful piece of history - Ernie Hine - still the record scorer at Oakwell with 131 goals for the Reds - unlikely to be bettered
