Apparently we're linked along with other clubs for this lad, I know nothing of him. It's a pre-contract agreement it says on Sky.

Would pre contract mean he’s coming in the summer then?

Would imagine so as he's got four months left of his contract

19yo, he'll be another in the very long list of signings for the development squad.

Don't know if there is any truth in this rumour but the kid has talent and probably too good for us. Watch from 3:05...

Not necessarily. We might be offering him a clearer path to first team football.

Well we've had Jason Scotland. I wonder if Stephen Ireland wants to unhang his boots for 3 month?

Well we sure as hell need a couple of strikers in the summer. Hope he’s not another Oli Shaw if we are getting him.

Not necessarily, given he's played 65 games in men's professional football. That's more than Aiden Marsh.

If it is to happen it's the type of transfer that makes me think we may aswell shut our academy.

Not if those we bring in are better than some of those in the academy. Very few make it to professional level, as is the case at most clubs.
I would hazard a guess less than 20% at Barnsley get to a professional contract. Less than 5% in the premiership.

Less than 1% of young soccer players who join youth academies make it to the professional level.
    Explanation
    • In 2022, 97% of former elite academy players aged 21 to 26 years old had never played in the Premier League.
    • In 2015, the English FA found that less than 0.5% of players signed by professional teams under the age of 9 would ever play for the first team.
    • A longitudinal study found that only 10% of players were successful in obtaining a professional contract.
Being released from a football academy can have a serious impact on young players. It can lead to depression, anxiety, and a loss of confidence.

    How clubs offer professional contracts
Clubs typically offer a professional contract to a scholar at the end of their two-year scholarship, when they are about 18 years old. However, the contract might be offered as soon as they turn 17.

Then like I said what's the point in the academy?
Is Dyer good enough? Who knows, at some point it would be nice to give academy players actual game time to even come to a decsion, otherwise we are just running a white Elephant and the end point of producing homegrown players to play for the reds, sell on for profit is pretty pointless, surely that's what the purpose is?

I doubt Dyer is going to be good enough given that he's not been given a chance and not shown much in his loans to clubs lower down the pyramid.
That said, we may as well have given him a go between now and the end of the season instead of bringing in the random loans that we have.

But is that not the case for every club given the stats I've given. If academy players don't develop you don't throw em in for the sake of it. And it doesn't stop you picking up players who you may think may improve the squad. We have taken academy players from other clubs it's nowt new tbh.
Fans are generally impatient, they want ready made and proven articles which may or may not come off. Take Marsh as a prime example. Chosen over Dyer. But fans not thinking he's good enough to play at this level. He may improve with more gametime elsewhere. Sometimes you have 2, 3, or 4 come through at the same time but not that often.
Once Clarke has totally given up on a chance of a play off place. I'm sure he'll introduce more into the squad/team.
I was chuckling to missen Saturday. Folk around me, given up on the seasons play off prospects, then looking at results elsewhere and checking the table, hoping, lol.

Granted he's got some experience of football with the misters. It is exclusively in the Scottish leagues though, so dampens my enthusiasm somewhat.
