Darrell Clarke ahead of Emirates FA Cup first round tie against Port Vale https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtQkwrfJ5o0 View on YouTube...
I really hope we take this competition a bit more seriously than the BSM Trophy, winning breeds winning and a cup run is always enjoyable and potentially lucrative
I agree. Vale are doing well in the league and should be up for it. I don’t want to be going there half arsed. Let’s have a proper cup match!
There’s no way we will be going there with any ideas/plans other than to win. Seen some poor FA cup performances and results over the years but I don’t believe any of them are a result of us being ‘ half-arsed’
No, you’re misunderstanding me. I didn’t mean not trying to win. It was more a question of the strength of the team we put out.
Wires crossed, I meant that I believe we’ll play our strongest available side and give it our all. That doesn’t mean to say I think we’ll play good, bad or indifferent, win, lose or draw. I just think we’ll go for it. Now when the players cross that white line, well ????
Yeah and its the same in the League cup, which has lost almost all of the prestige it used to have. Most teams put out reserves or youngsters in the first few rounds, making it meaningless.
I think with the FA cup we’d got used to coming in at the third round stage, along with the championship and big clubs. There’s not much to grab the imagination unless you’re the non league club attempting a giant killing, or maybe getting a local derby.
I didn't feel the pressure then against Enfield, but there must have been thousands of neutrals who wanted to see them beat us. I definitely felt it more though when it came to Caernarfon and Bromsgrove, both away. And we'll never let ourselves forget Altringham, will we!.
I didn’t really understand the significance of the Enfield game as I’d not been going long. Went to Caernarfon & Aldershot, the latter probably wouldn’t have gone ahead nowadays, pitch was frozen. Missed Bromsgrove as I played Saturday football that season. Altrincham was bad because it was against a non league club, but the performance at Northampton early 2000s was probably as bad a cup game as I’ve seen, and also Bury away in the league cup 1980s was pretty dire. Lost both 2-0.
I agree about Round 3. I was happy over here, as ESPN+ show all the games live. However, I’ve just realized that doesn’t apply for the first 2 rounds. They’re only showing a couple of games tomorrow, so iFollow audio and the All Blacks game in the background it shall be.
There's been some other Fa cup disappointments as well of course, for us against bigger clubs. Away at Man City in season '92, and home to Aston Villa in season '94, they both come to mind. We never layed a finger on either of them, and I think they were both 2-0!. But the worst result for me (a 4-0), was when the performance actually deserved so much better. This was the replay away at Leeds in season '90.
I like away matches as I expect us to win seems as with the combination of last season and what's been played this season our 18 away wins is more than anyone in the 92 clubs. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/UG9SKsdATCeu9jws/
