Ireland's Call is not exactly a folk song...it was commissioned specially to soothe political sensibilities....during the Troubles no anthem was supposedly played, (although I went in the 70's and thought they played Danny Boy) The Republic of Ireland's National Anthem is The Soldier's Song which is now played in Dublin games...but due to it being regarded as a Republican song (and taught in schools in the Republic) Protestant Ulstermen don't sing it, Ireland's Call was written as an all inclusive ' anthem'.
No real idea why it was adopted. Was originally a folk song written by the folk duo The Corries back in the early 70s
It was, although the Ulsterman don’t sing this song either. I guess your average Protestant has no desire to answer Irelands call. I like it though. Quite upbeat and catchy.
I remember Scotland The Brave played before tournaments or the Commonwealth games. Why did they stop using that?
I've always like the Uruguay Nation Anthem, don't know what they're singing about, but the clearly mean it!!
While I agree completely changing it would likely cause more upset than good. I'd leave it be unless we actually got shut of the Monarchy.
Every November/December, we hold a TV show to elect the new King/Queen. Ant & Dec - or Claudia & A N Other - celebrity judges, sob stories, Britain's Got Royals, Saturday night TV gold. The winner gets to live in Buck House for a year, open a few things and raise some money for their choice of charity then hands the crown over to the next winner at the end before returning to a life of obscurity. The winner gets to choose the design of the stamps, the national anthem and various other things for their year. The actual royals can choose one of the palaces to live in - we sell off the rest or convert to social housing (which is what they are now really) - and get a small stipend to live on of £1 million/year (for the lot of them).
I don't like it for the same reasons as others but I can't see it ever going. I'd choose there'll always be an England. There's nothing religious about it, nothing offensive and it is a very patriotic song. Would love to hear it played by a full orchestra and sang by a stadium full of sports fans Red, white and blue What does it mean to you? Surely you're proud, shout it aloud Britons, awake The empire too, we can depend on you Freedom remains These are the chains Nothing can break There'll always be an England And England shall be free If England means as much to you As England means to me
