The final game in the group stage of the EFL trophy. A straight shootout to determine who tops the group and gets a home advantage in round 2. The bookies have made us narrow 16/11 favourites to secure top berth in the group, with the hosts priced slightly longer at 8/5. To get to this position, we've both beaten Grimsby and Man City U21s by an aggregate scoreline of 5-1, though Bradford faced Grimsby away from home. In the league this season, the Bantams have struggled. They've lost their last 4 in the league, and have accumulated just 3 victories in their last 13. Despite sacking Mark Hughes in early October, and experiencing a slight upturn in form shortly after, Graham Alexander is also struggling to get a tune out of City, and have slipped to 19th in the table. At home, they've gained 12 points from 8 games, though have suffered back to back home defeats in all competitions. That said, they've lost just 1 at home in the league, despite only having the 18th best home record in the division. They have also lost at home in the cups to Wycombe and Middlesbrough. Referee Will Finnie has issued 56 yellows and 3 reds in 17 games this season. He last took charge of a Barnsley game earlier this year, when the reds ran rampant against Plymouth at Oakwell, coming out as 3-0 victors against the eventual league champions. He took charge of his last Bradford game, early last season, which was a 2-0 home victory for the Bantams over Newport. I reckon it'll be a heavily rotated reds side again, with the likes of McCarthy, possibly Connell, Cosgrove, Danny Benson, maybe Aiden Marsh getting the nod. It's a tough one to predict, but I'll go for 0-1 with Marsh on the scoresheet.
It’s almost impossible to predict the starting line up isn’t it?!? I’m really not sure I can make a confident prediction. I’m a big believer in minutes on the pitch. With no game last weekend I’d like us to put a reasonably strong team out. Get more minutes into Luca, Sam, Josh etc. Would totally understand though if it was just kids with nothing riding on the game as such. I’m going for a 2-0 win with goals for Cosgrove and Benson. But certainly wouldn’t have any money on it!
Based on what I saw their defence to be like on Saturday and how quick we get forward, I’m gonna say 3-0 to us.
