Glavin signed for us at the ripe old age of 28. The best I’ve seen in a reds shirt. Some great shouts from others, some favourites who haven’t featured; Steve Agnew - on his day class and a Barnsley lad Carl Tiler - Classy defender and paid for a stand Nicky Eaden - Always under rated Mark Robinson - Good enough for Keegan to splash out £500k Some great memories and some real talent.
1972 Applying some criteria: Not what they were or went on to be, only for us and trying to factor in the level they played for us at: in descending order: Redfearn Glavin Stones Ashley Ward Hignett Paul Futcher McCarthy De Zeuuw Ian Banks - first time round David Hurts (sic) - cos he went to washday I'm having 11 cos I'm also picking a goalie. Luke Steele just beats David Watson If I had applied a criteria of standing rooted to the spot in the middle of the field and pointing to people, then Eric Tinkler would win hands down.
1968 Ronnie Glavin Mick McCarthy Pat Howard Eric Winstanley Paul Futcher Neil Redfearn Craig Hignett Ashley Ward Darren Barnard Trevor Aylott.
My 10 from approx 1988 (in no particular order) Luca Connell Arjan de Zeeuw Neil Redfearn Ashley Ward Paul Futcher Craig Hignett Adam Hammill David Watson Bobby Hassell Darren Barnard And a few I wish I'd never seen pull on a shirt Robin Van Der Laan Dave Regis Mido Frimpong
There's not many Barnsley players I really don't like. I've got nothing good to say of about Frimpong and Mido but they played so little for us that I haven't the energy to let them bother me. Dave Regis I think was a lot better than we ever saw and I've no problem with him at all. But Robin Vat of Lard, I really don't like. We were losing at home to Port Vale, he was jogging round the pitch being outpaced by the ref and the linesman, and then he started waving and smiling at the Port Vale fans. That still annoys me. He was probably better than I give him credit for, but from that point forward I couldn't see anything good in him at all. I also thought Potts was crap. Not for any particular reason, other than he was crap.
1975 1. Ronnie Glavin 2. Mick McCarthy 3. Ian Banks 4. David Currie 5. Aryan De Zeeuw 6. Craig Hignett 7. Neil Redfearn 8. Adam Hammill 9. Ashley Ward 10. Paul Futcher
No particular order but here goes, first match was in 2005, beat Yeovil 1-0 1. Adam Hammill 2. Bobby Hassell 3. Heinz Muller 4. Brian Howard 5. Danny Nardiello 6. Chris O'Grady 7. Alfie Mawson 8. Ricardo Vaz Te 9. Conor Hourihane 10. Mads Andersen
Although they haven’t featured in many lists if any I think in there ought to be a special mention for Clarkey and Big Norm two true greats who have graced our turf. OK at the end of their careers, but pure quality none the less!
Since April 1984. 1) Craig Hignett 2) Neil Redfearn 3) Ashley Ward 4) Carl Tiler 5) David Currie - 1st time around 6) Steve Agnew 7) John Hendrie 8) Mark Robinson - Wing back days 9) John Beresford 10) Darren Barnard
1955 but for those first few years, while I can recall some names I don’t recall, other than Duncan Sharp, any stand out players. Plus mi memory's not what it used to be. Moved away from Barnsley in 2009 and not been to a match for 14 years, so not included any of the modern players. Ronnie Glavin - simply the best player I saw in a BFC shirt. Duncan Sharp - tried to model myself on him as a footballer and failed miserably. Neil Redfearn Mick McCarthy Eric Winstanley Paul Futcher Craig Hignett Mick Butler Ashley Ward Chris Morgan
