I bought the Durham Town single full price which was rare for me (1969). Usually got the bargain ex-juke box ones much cheaper.

    Great voice RIP Roger

I don’t mind saying The Last Farewell is one of my favourite records. I think it’s a fantastic song.

Just like when Elvis covered Guitar Man using exactly the same arrangement as Jerry Reed’s original (to the point of bringing Reed in to repeat his guitar part!), Elvis paid the same respect to Whittaker, by covering The Last Farewell using Whittaker’s arrangement. And Elvis may have the better voice, but Whittaker’s version is better!

The Last Farewell was one of the must have songs on board Royal Navy Ships when they had the onboard concerts, I was lucky enough to be on the Ark Royal where we had a full time Royal Marine Band and the BBC released the Last Farewell LP with Sailing on of course. I still brag to the grandkids I had a top ten record LOL. Last Farewell was certainly sang with much more gusto than almost anything else. Durham Town was released as I joined at 15 and made me more homesick than I really needed to be.
I kidded myself I could whistle as good as Roger, but we all do things like that. RIP sir.

I remember him on BBC children's TV. His show used to have a weird game called "Baddlewak" or something like that.

I accidentally stumbled across a reference to him a few years ago and he had a degree in zoology, biochemistry and marine biology. So not just a funny man with a number of hit records, but smart too.
