    The rules of rugby union.
I watched last night and once again was totally baffled by everything.
The French anthem made more sense and that was gobbledygook.

Penalties are given out randomly for seemingly imperceptible infractions. Similar to football.

Its similar to Rugby League, but with a constantly moving ball, skills beyond tackling, and a lack of having to re-start the game every few seconds.

I'm not an expert by any means. But I'd say league is a more free flowing game. And depends what you mean by a constantly moving ball.
A better spectator game (league) in my humble opinion. I've never taken to union. Bear in mind, never played either. Wasnt played at school. And no real local side at a decent level. to gather an interest.

It frustrates me when they can go through several phases of play then drag it back for a penalty

I'm the polar opposite to you. Can't sit through a Rugby League game without getting bored (could perhaps make an exception for Featherstone Rovers games). I walked out of a Leeds Rhinos game a few weeks ago before half-time as it was so dull (we got discounted tickets as my daughter was part of the on-field pre-game Rob Burrows tribute).

I played union at school and university, so can appreciate things like the scrum and line-outs, although the game has evolved completely from when I played, and I like the fact that the ball is constantly recycled without the need to restart the game every time.

League, by comparison, is totally one-dimensional. The stop-start thing alone can't be the sole factor, given that I'm a huge NFL fan, which is as stop-start a sport as there is, but it has depth and nuances that Rugby League simply lacks.

It's weird how people differ on this, and it's solely down to personal taste. I suspect playing experience, at whatever level, makes a difference. I don't watch union religiously, but I can sit through a game on TV, whereas I'll be channel hopping within a few minutes with a league game.

Of the 3 options, that's the one I'd choose to watch above the others every single time.

When did teams take on the names of Tigers and Rhinos and the like?
I can remember way back in the sixties watching on tv Saturday afternoon. Both teams covered in mud. Could not make out who was who and of course it was all on black and white tv.
I also remember in the 70s watching Floodlit Rugby League with Eddie Waring and his up and unders.

You’d have to start with basics with me. Can’t make head nor tail of the line up formation.

Like Rugby League but harder to get the ball off your opponents, as you don't have to purposely kick the ball to the other team after a certain amount of tackles.

Find NFL annoying because it truly is stop/ start. Went to see New Orleans v Cincinatti in the Superdrome and it took hours. No one is watching the match - they are all on a social of eating, drinking and chatting. Just so many breaks it’s ridiculous.
    My preference would be
    Union
    League
    American Football

It all came with the mid 1990’s Sky Super League bulls**t.. the best one was when Gary Hetherington announced the exciting new name for Leeds RLFC... he's a bit short tongued and Leeds Rhino's came out as Leeds Wino's.
Halifax Blue Sox was particularly embarrassing, but the worst was probably when Bradford Northern ditched it's traditions and became Bradford Bulls... They had a big bulls head painted on the doors of the tunnel with nostril holes for smoke to come out of, it looked like they had two people with a ciggie each blowing the smoke through.
Floodlit Trophy... Bramley won it once, first trophy they'd won in years, my old man sent the club a tenner to buy all the team a drink. We got a nice letter back from their coach Arthur Keegan (top RL man in his day) inviting us round to meet the lads on a match day.
