On this day in 1976, General Manager Johnny Steele announced that after many years of kicking off Saturday games at Oakwell at 3:15, the club had decided to fall in line with other clubs time of 3pm.
I know it's true mate. But I honestly don't remember kicking off at that time. Lots keep telling me so, and I started watching in 66. Brain rinse required.
Can’t remember the 3.15 KO’s not that I would have been there back then but it was a religion to watch the tele printer and get all the scores but I can’t ever remember Barnsley being a late score in.
I got really drunk that day. Had to spend the whole day in pubs because my train home was not until about 7.30 iirc.
I think it was to allow for shift changes at local pits? So lads could get to the ground, I could be wrong.?
Yep so did most people we initially headed to Weatherspoons but steered clear as they were fighting in lumps outside , not sure if it was Barnsley fans involved or just a normal Saturday afternoon !!
It was the daft hibees casuals picking on you unsuspecting lads. You came for a laugh and a good time and the mental cripples tried to spoil it for you. You were probably in the Wetherspoons bottom of Leith Walk which would not have been a good idea. But when only a friendly should have been trouble free. In fact it should always be trouble free. Idiots.
Pontefract Races used to have to start after 2pm until the Prince of Wales Colliery closed to allow shift miners to attend. They also didn't race on Saturdays due to an agreement with Pontefract Market.
Maybe you were watching the game from 3pm. Them warming up prior to kick off. You thought we were laking well, 15 minutes gone and still got a clean sheet. Come on Tarn the voice cries out from the old West Stand stood on a crate next to the wall. I was alreight I couldn't see over wall I was younger than thee,so ar knew nowt else. Lol
Used to sit ont barriers mate. Int ponty. Had one to missen lol. In fact everyone did. West stand terrace bacame my place of residence from about 1972.
The only thing that I remember Ian. Is I'd get home and go straight to the newsagents. The Green un. Renowned as the biggest selling local sports paper covering all South Yorkshire league and non league scores. Would arrive around 5:45-6pm. And our score was among the late results section many occasions. And now that leads me to thinking it would be just the 3:15 kick offs at home. They allus said the Barnsley area got the earliest editions at print so they could deliver em out asap. And those closer to Sheffield the later editions. But the readers got em at the same time so to speak. Around 6 ish.
1968ish stood in west stand On a crate, mi dad stood with his mates sharting at ref n swearing thinking I could not here him. Me sharting at Spud for his autograph. Norman Dean one of my fav ❤.
Used to love the 3.15 kick offs, they would ring the last orders bell in the Mount, get a last pint , drink it & then walk up to the ground & through the turnstiles just in time for the kick off , minds you with gates so low you were never going to get stuck in a queue !!
