In Victorian times, one bloke at Frys decided to have a bash at turning out little jelly bears. But every time they came out of the mould though they looked like babies. So, they decided to market them as UNCLAIMED BABIES as real unwanted babies were often left around the streets. They sold very well. After the First World War they were marketed as ‘Peace Babies’ and the name Jelly Babies wasn’t introduced until 1953. I don’t think Mars bars are from the planet Mars.
That's really interesting. I think most of our traditional chocolate bars come from the 1920's and 30's actually. Seem to remember reading it a while ago. I do wish they'd bring back Texan Bars though - they took a long time a chewin'.
That’s a true story. Though not as tragic as the previous century. The times of Thomas Coram, Hogarth & the Foundling Hospital. & it sparked a trade in the hooves & bones of dead horses. I found this story, when researching my book about the Foundling Hospital, at the point it left London in 1920s. I should publish that, might sell a dozen copies. Interesting though, I need to look more into Rothemere. Great philanthropist, but basically a fcking Nazi. Curious character.
