I sleep with ear plugs in, and usually sleep through heavy rain and thunder (and through my house being burgled), but it was that loud I was convinced there'd been a car accident outside of my house. It wasn't until I heard it rumble again that I realised what it was.

My Dad said that my Mum once woke him on a flight to South Africa, to tell him she could see the Sahara Desert. His reply - “You’ve woken me to see the biggest load of f’ck all there is on planet earth.”

Worst I ever heard was a couple of times in Colombia two years ago. One was in an open sided restaurant. It sounded like a bomb had exploded. Even the locals who are used to it (thunder that is, not bombs) were diving for cover.
Tralee was flipping flooded last night though so we had a good going over.

I also sleep with earbuds in and it woke me up. The sound and flashes through the curtains made it seem like it was very close.

Thunder...nah....it was only my grandad rolling the beer barrels
Well that's what my mother used to tell me when I was really young lol

Once told my grandson who was 6 at the time the very same thing and he told me it's not grandpa it's a change in air pressure in an electrical storm ...whoops
Mind you we were once going past some cooling towers and I told him look its a cloud factory... he said youre so silly grandpa its steam which causes acid rain....
No fooling the young uns these days is there lol
