Anybody been? Staying on the lapad peninsula, just wondering what sight seeing is recommended? Thinking about walking the old town walls and doing the cable car and boat trip to the island's, but everything seems so expensive. Any tips appreciated.
Been and lvd it..the old town and city walls are brilliant. dont kno if ya a Game of Thrones fan but lots was filmed there and there are great location tours...
Yeah we went a few years ago loved it. We did the Game of Thrones tour which took in most of the Old Town. It was roasting though. Did a buggy safari up Mount Srd the views from up there are amazing. And did trip to Bowa restaurant which is on the islands and has its own private beach. All quite expensive though from what I recall.
Old Dubrovnik is superb. We stayed in Cavtat a few miles away but went on a boat trip there in the day and then at night on the bus. Walked the walls and did the cable car which were both well worth doing. Dubrovnik is expensive though for food and drink. If you search round you can manage to find some reasonable(ish) priced places though.
We walked around the old town today and it was great, seen the game of thrones stuff advertised but never watched it so a bit oblivious to that one
Went last year mate. Been to Croatia multiple times, its such a beautiful country, our favourite holiday destination by a distance. We are going again in 4 weeks time, but this time to Medulin on the Istrian Peninsula. We have been so many times now, to different parts of the country, it feels like a second home! We didn't do many organised trips last year as we stayed close by in Cavtat a few years ago and did the boat trips etc then. But my two Pence worth is: a. The old city is breathtaking. But it gets very busy during the day because of the cruise ship drop offs. And it's very very hot. Do the city walls if you must, but do them early morning or in the evening. If you do them in the middle of the day, you'll wish you hadn't. b. Make sure you visit the old town on an evening as well. Much more relaxed then, when the cruise wallers have buggered off back to their ships. Very relaxed vibe. c. You will see game of thrones tour people everywhere. I have never ever watched it but still did the tour and it was quite fun and interesting but again, took it out of us because it was so hot. d. I took a Tui trip to Mostar in Bosnia. Full day job and went on my own because the missus isn't into culture in the same way but I loved it. Long day though. e. There are island boat tours to choose from but the islands down that end of the country are quite a distance away, not like the ones in the centre of the country like Hvar which are a short hop from the mainland. f. The bus comes down the road where all the hotels are on the Lapad peninsula around every 10 minutes and are cheap as chips and very reliable. It's quite a walk into town so do use the buses. It drops off and picks up right outside the old town and the end of the line is the last hotel on the peninsula, where it turns around and loops back. No 10 I think, but don't quote me on that, it's been a year. g. Being a tourist honey pot, it's noticeably more expensive in Dubrovnik than other parts of Croatia. But its worth it, it's beautiful. Which hotel are you in? We were in the Valamar Argosy. The views of the sunset at dinner time took my breath away. You just had to stop eating and take pictures! Edit - just re read your post and realised you are already there, so you probably know most of what I just said, ha!
Cheers mate, was chatting to someone today that said Cavtat was nice so might try to get there from Dubrovnik. Only here for 5 nights but can't stop myself from saying how much?
If you're hiring a car, get yourself to Trpanj. The best fish restaurant I've ever eaten in is there, and it was absolutely dirt cheap compared with Dubrovnik.
Yeah, Cavtat is nice (small though). There is a regular round trip boat service from the old harbour to Cavtat. Fun fact - the hotel we stayed in when we went to Cavtat, the hotel Croatia, was requisitioned during the balkans war as the UN HQ.
That's brilliant mate, thank you for the advice, We're staying in the Valamar Argosy hotel too and already took loads of photos of the views , caught the bus to the old town today which was easy and will probably go again tomorrow night to walk the walls.
You're probably not going to consider a full day out to Bosnia if you are only there for 5 days. But if you did do it, make sure you turn data off when you cross the border as Bosnia is not in the EU so falls into the "rest of the world" data cost. I forgot and had a few news sites auto updating in the background and ran up a data cost of 30 quid by lunchtime without even taking my phone out of my pocket, before Vodafone auto cut it off. Fortunately, it's a work phone
Hahaha, we had similar in cape Verde last year, our lasses phone calls to her dad cost more than the holiday I think we'll definitely come back to Dubrovnik for longer and try to fit more in.Like you said It's hard to leave the hotel pool with the views.
Just remembered - one trip we did last year was a day cruise from Dubrovnik down to Kotor in Montenegro. Now THAT was a nice day. We had a holiday in Budva in Montenegro in 2019 and went that year to Kotor and loved it so wanted to go back. Well worth it.
