After the disastrous 3-0 defeat securing almost certain relegation atNottingham Forest, my daughter and I were abandoned in the late hours by Megabus (the only way home). Roll on a few years and her next (rather daft) attempt to use Megabus and she is now unable to get to Newcastle due to a 3 hour delay. just made me think - between folks on this forum we must have had some nightmare trips?
Remember travelling to a game years ago and game got called off due to snow - got to Wakefield Kirkgate and had to spend two hours there! It's not the most comfortable - set off from Liverpool at 8 arrived in Barnsley about 5!!
In April 1978 I was in Oslo. On a Thursday afternoon I found out that Barnsley were playing at Brentford on the coming Saturday. I worked out all the train times and set off. I arrived on Saturday morning. It was piling it down, we lost 2-0 and had Paul Walker sent off. Well worth it.
Anfield 1981, we were involved in a multiple car pile-up on the fog-bound M62. Thankfully no-one injured and although car was a bit of a of a mess, it was safe to drive. Only 20 minutes left by the time we got to our seats and even then loads of reds fans still going in. Never seen so many away fans at a league ground before. Loads of trouble outside after the game didn’t help, but we were all so ****-a-hoop with the 0-0 draw it didn’t spoil the celebrations
Not football but you have to go some to beat my sister’s effort in Australia. Went for after- works drinks in Sydney. Fell asleep on the train home and ended up in the Blue Mountains. No trains back so 60 miles In a taxi to get back where she started.
It's a real shame what happened to Wakefield Kirkgate and Pontefract Baghill. Both mainline stations in their day. Same with Rotherham Masborough. Wakefield Kirkgate lost the Newcastle to Liverpool Trans Pennine service. Re-routed via Leeds. Pontefract Baghill lost the Newcastle to Plymouth and Poole cross country service and York to Blackpool Trans Pennine service when they were rerouted. As for Rotherham Masborough the town made a short sighted decision to focus on Rotherham Central and lost the cross country service. Now you have to change at Sheffield or Doncaster.
When we lost to Man City away in cup a few years back the coach we were on broke down in middle of all the traffic and took over an hour to repair. By time we got back going again snow had started over snake pass and it took us hour and hours to get home.
Missed the last train in Nice once because I was playing Still D.R.E. on the piano in the station. Cost me a £100 taxi
Was in Prague when the Icelandic volcano stopped all flights..came home on a slightly ageing bus through the night..got stuck in London trying to get to mi car in Birmingham.
Boxing Day early 2000's. Me and @Chef Tyke woke up at our parents' place in Lincolnshire with cracking festive hangovers, and decided that out of the day's choices of: a) stay in bed, chill, have a few recovery beers in front of Soccer Saturday OR b) drive 3 hours on frozen roads to The Wirral to watch Tranmere v Barnsley that option B was clearly the best. Except it took about 5 and a half hours. We arrived at half time after an "eventful" drive, which involved such delights as coming off the M62 to avoid the traffic and driving through every town in Lancashire, and reversing down the Mersey Tunnel at 3.35pn after yet another navigational catastrophe. Took our seats as the teams came out for the second half, Iain Hume immediately cracked in a goal for Tranmere. Spent the rest of the second half reconsidering our priorities in life, only for Anthony Kaye to equalise deep into injury time. Cue pandemonium in the Barnsley end, and a very happy 5 hour drive back to Lincolnshire. If I remember correctly, we got absolutely hammered on our dad's spirits when we finally got back, followed by smoking a couple Havanas from his cigar stash. Sorry dad, but to be fair we'd earned it!
Ah - now that was one of my favourite “travel disasters”. We were in Spain and ended up staying an extra week free of charge. Had a bit of running around trying to get travel home rearranged but ended up with two weeks for the price of one.
Interestingly that volcano stopped Lewandowski signing for Blackburn. Definitely not a disaster for him...
In 1982, on my way to pick my sister up from Gatwick airport, driving down the M11 from Cambridge less than a mile from the end of the motorway at Redbridge in my 7-year old Mini Clubman Estate when I looked in the driving mirror. There were rivers of dark coloured fluid running down the back window. Then the oil light came on. The seal round the oil filter had sprung a leak and all my engine oil was dumped... I turned off the engine and coasted along the hard shoulder and straight into a petrol station. Managed to fix the leak and refill the sump before continuing to Gatwick.
