Or history. Something I've never chanted at football. (Only on the picket lines). Some of the miners in those areas don't deserve that. Made mates with quite a few especially in Derbyshire. A couple I went on to work alongside when I worked at YW.
Don't forget many in South Derbyshire did join the UDM in the strike. Many NUM lads will not forget the 20 quid notes waved at the pickets fighting for jobs while they were bussed into work crossing picket lines. It as got nothing to do with football . But for some the bitterness won't go away.
I get that Bazza. But I fall into the category of if I were a striking miner from derbyshire. I'd be sick to my stomach to hear that chant. And I am no different to you mate on my thoughts of those that scabbed and hated the met particularly with a passion. I picketed throughout the entire strike and went back one day after the official end. You can also back me up on the wooley issue I assume mate.
Pretty sure it was for the red suspenders/ripper song - I was at the other end though so can’t be certain but whatever it was in response to, the fact they had to do it in the first place (and the fact the plebs who sung it will moan about snowflakes, wokeness, pc gone mad, game’s gone, delete as appropriate) is a pretty damning indictment of a faction of our fan base. Always the same people. Same stand, same area of it. And a lot of them the same folk who often spoil away games by not being able to behave remotely reasonably. Though I doubt our fan behaviour is any worse than most other clubs, all have their idiot element from what I’ve seen, doesn’t excuse it of course but I sincerely hope any sanctions or punishments are consistently applied. I believe the issues at Barnsley were more to do with what we don’t/didn’t do to mitigate against these things rather than the fact it happened; the club is expected to do what it can, not work miracles. Hence pre match announcements and tannoy announcements mid-game if something goes amiss.
Never understood in this day and age why some songs are still sung other than being handed down from older generations that have still not grown out of em. People are aware of the consequences. There were none to my knowledge (consequences) a decade or two ago. Barring probably racist chants.
Tbh mate from the games I've been to home and away. Away fans dont seem to have as big a catalogue as ours. Place is a shithole maybe. And the odd stray into Cocks massive. I do wear hearing aids mind
Why do people assume this? It gets said every year but I bet most people chanting will have had at least one relative on strike & I’m pretty certain they’ll have grown up on tales about that period. I wasn’t even alive but I had a dad & two grandads on strike. I’ve seen TV clips of my dad at picket lines. He’s still got loads of mementos from his time working in the pits & what was passed down from his dad. Used to stay at my Grandad’s every weekend & after the Barnsley score the next ones he looked for were Forest & Notts County, hoping they’d lost. I bet that if you had a conversations with some of the fans chanting it you’d be surprised just how much young people know about that era (Obviously not anyone in a state coked up or pissed).
This history as got to be passed down . Pickets beaten up on picket lines , Scabs meeting Thatcher with huge cash incentives to continue working. I try to forget but it's hard . I despair at workers fighting for scraps. I deplore this set of @#$%^ filling their pockets while the working class ask for pay rises. It's horrible what happened in 1984 ,they must be reminded they sold their souls for 40 pieces of gold. Those that didn't work in that area got persecuted by the scab workforce. Don't ever forget what your Dad's and Grandads tried to acheive.
Cheers to that mate. UDM were having private meetings with Thatcher. I seem to remember some Notts miners loyal to the strike hung a noose up in the UDM offices. As a gesture for those officials to hang themselves.
