Yes its a real issue outside of football for women in several middle eastern countries. I am not expert on the Quran but I think its based on the fact that sex outside marriage is a crime. As it doesnt specifically mention excemptions some bigoted men take this to mean a woman who is raped has admitted to having sex outside marriage therefore is guilty of a heinous sin. I assume their logic goes she must have encouraged it somehow so its her fault for leading the man astray The cynic might suspect its just a device to stop women reporting it so men can get away with whatever they like
I believe it’s the case that they will take it to court and try the rapist for the crime if he either confesses or the victim can produce 4 (male) witnesses to the crime. Of course, if 4 blokes witness a rape they are invariably the rapists. It’s things like this that make me angry when we get told to “respect the culture” when in foreign countries. Not everything deserves our respect.
