Hi all, I very rarely miss a Barnsley game home and away but will be missing Shrewsbury this Saturday. There is a good reason for this. I have changed my sons match from Sunday to Saturday and have arranged for some of my family, friends and friends of friends which are all veterans/ex servicemen to come to my sons match and perform a remembrance service before kick off. We have a number of ex servicemen coming from different regiments in their colours, berets and standards. We also have a good friend that will perform The last post on the bugle. So.. if anyone isn’t going to the match and has a free hour spare on Saturday morning you are more than welcome to come and support our vets/ex servicemen on this weekend of remembrance. We play at South Hiendley welfare ground, S72 9BS. The pitch is straight opposite The Sun Inn pub between the houses. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM!
The reason I brought it forward is so everyone wishing to attend a parade any where on Sunday they can do so
I will be there as we are every year. Your more than welcome to join in with ours on Saturday if you are free?
Very kind mate, I'm proudly marching with the Type 21 association ( I was on HMS Active during the Falklands conflict) . Have a great day, might see you there.
Originally, it was built to commemerate the men who had lost their lives during World War 1. It was unveiled early in the 1920's.
It looks similar in the way it's sculptured to a brass ornament my Grandad was given of a miner when he left South Kirkby pit in the early eighties.
Just a reminder. If anyone has a free hour this morning, have a drive up to South Hiendley Welfare, Main Street, S72 9BS. Before my sons match we are having a small remembrance service to remember those who gave their lives so we could have ours! We will be there around 10.15. The match will commence after the service at 11.02. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
I do not mean this to be disrespectful but when did it become “Remembrance Weekend”? For me there is Armistice Day which is always 11th November and Remembrance Sunday which falls on the nearest Sunday to the 11th. On another level a couple of weeks ago it was Halloween Weekend?!?!?!
Mother can you hear me I'm lying here all alone In this foreign country So many miles from home I can see your gentle face Tears shining in your eyes When you left me at the station And we said our last goodbyes My life is flashing here before me I know my end is near And running down my cheek I can taste a salty tear I can see our little house On our little road And all my friends I played with Unlike them, I won't grow old I can see all of our neighbours Standing with their cups of tea I looked out for those neighbours And they looked out for me And I can see sweet Maggie She lives two doors away My dream it was to fall in love And marry her some day And I can see my Father A gentle man was he When he came home from the docks He would rock me on his knee Forgive me mum for leaving you I know I've broke your heart But I'm fighting for my country I had to do my part Just remember Mother What you taught me way back then When our time on earth is over We shall meet up once again So Mother I'll be waiting At Heaven's open door And when the good Lord calls you We shall never part no more Mum I have to go now I'm in a lot of pain I'm waiting on my Saviour Calling out my name I hope they take my body home To that grand place of my Birth Then I can rest forever In my good old Barnsley Earth LWF❤️
Watching Festival of Remberence on bbc, absolutely brilliant and so sad at times. The work that goes into putting this on is nothing short of remarkable. So many wasted lives and great to remember them. We will remember them.
