Elderly friend driving home along Pogmoor Road from the Hospital - indicated to turn right onto Warner Avenue opposite Post office - stopped to let approaching car go past him - approaching car (not speeding) crashed into his car. Two men got out of the the car that crashed into him and quickly pushed both cars to the road side.
They refused to give any details to the elderly friend - he phoned the police - they were not interested as the cars weren't 'blocking the highway.'
He then went to A & E to be checked out - badly shaken - also in A & E are the two guys who were in the car that rammed him, together with another two guys.
What exactly is going on - some sort of scam ?- what should the elderly friend do regards Insurance ?

He needs to tell his insurance company all the details he can remember and let them deal with it. Sounds a terrifying ordeal, bless him.

Sounds proper suspicious. He needs to make sure the insurance know everything from his perspective, including the fact that only 2 people were in the car not 4. Hopefully he got the reg number, although the chances of it being legit and actually registered to them may be in doubt.

Everyone - get dash cans fitted. Now. Invaluable in these instances.

Alternatively, get dash caMs. They're the upgrade ;) But on a serious note, definitely echo what DSLRed says, vitally important these days with all the fraud/scams attempted. Me dads been wanting one for a while

Definitely report it to the insurers, but also report it to SYP, it needs logging to make them at least recognise there might be a crime... use 101 number or to save time do it online.

A bit of self detective work might help, revisit the scene and see if there are any likely CCTV cameras nearby, if there are, knock on the door and ask if the owner could look before it gets recorded over...the Post Office may well have all round CCTV as part of it's security....look at the top of nearby street lamps, sometimes there may be a Council owned camera on there...in which case contact your local Councillor to ask them to get in touch with DMBC's camera control room.

If they didn't exchange insurance details. How would they claim for injuries. Does sound dodgy though.

I thought it was an offence not to provide details to the other party involved in a motoring accident?

can’t see any scam here as they would have wanted his details, could definitely be a drugged/ drunk driver though. I thought it was mandatory for police to attend if someone was hurt though?

Only in the case of someone being injured or you kill a dog/ farm animal... or damage the highway infrastructure.

I would put my house on it being a scam. Used to come across this type of thing a lot when used to work for the police. Tends to be a fraud trend committed by South Asians, sometimes for fundraising purposes (terrorism).

agree - it smells like a scam!
(Warner Avenue has a 'wide' entrance so even if friend was parked wrongly - he wasn't! - plenty of room for oncoming cars to pass safely.)
I guess if the driver who caused the crash has valid licence and insurance and a medical report in the same name he could claim for any injuries. The other 'passengers' be there one or three would only have to submit details of their medical injuries as a basis for a financial claim - no proof of identity asked for - no way of proving if they were in the car or not when the 'accident' occurred.

Doesn’t even need to be the driver. As long as person claiming has those details.
