Last weekend I went to the pub up the road. There was a big event on that I had to see. Had a pint sitting with Mrs Statis in the beer garden. What was first amusing gradually became vaguely depressing. After one drink we left, convinced we were somehow living in a parallel universe. The entrance fee for the evening was £25. For that you got a three-course meal and cocktail. Doesn’t sound bad - but it wasn’t aimed at humans. It was a summer party for dogs. They had 2 paddling pools and a ‘beach’ there as well. Must have been around 50 dogs, barking, puking up food they obviously weren’t used to. Apparently the next canine event there is going to be a doggy fashion show. Entrance fee £30. Might give that one a miss. The cost of living crisis somehow seems to be bypassing the well-heeled of Richmond Hill.
The country’s current obsession with dogs is bewildering. They’re now canine humans. I say this as someone who had a dog for nearly twenty years, who we loved, but was always a dog. Apologies if I’ve offended anyone.
