ROMAL PALMER DEPARTS OAKWELL Club News Romal Palmer has joined Turkish side Göztepe SK after seven years at Barnsley. Continue reading on the official site...
I really hope the lad does well, and I find the digs at him pretty pathetic. When Covid hit, none of us knew a thing about him. Struber saw enough to bring him into the restarted season and he played his part in keeping us up. He then did extremely well under Val - nothing incredible individually but clearly an important part of a successful team. HIs "attitude" was definitely a positive part of those teams efforts. He lost his way badly last season, and was rightly dropped after probably being kept in the side much longer than he should have been due to a lack of alternatives. But he won't be the first or last to suffer a loss of form, and he's lost his contract as a result. He might not make a top level footballer, but he's done his best for Barnsley and done well for more of his time here than not. It's funny how every time we're doing ****, people want to just "play the youngsters, cos they'll at least have the desire." Until of course, we play the youngsters, at which point we crucify them.
He didn't lose his contract, he refused to sign a new one to keep him here. Palmer will be 24 soon, young, yes, but not really in football terms. People meant youngsters from the u23's/u18's and fringe players who haven't been given a run in the side, and Palmer definitely had a fair run. Some of the stuff is a bit OTT, but I think it was fairly obvious his heart wasn't in it anymore, he certainly didn't apply himself properly. Poor/no runs, not tracking back when he needs to, especially after losing the ball from a poor pass/interception. Players do dip in form all the time, but that doesn't mean just take the foot off the gas. I didn't particularly rate Frieser, or Vic, but you can't say they lacked the desire, commitment and just general hard work when not performing well
I'm making an educated guess that Palmer and Adeboyejo were both offered very minimal deals due to their ages and the likelihood that they would sign them. If he'd have done as well last year as the seasons before he'd have had a new deal on the same or better terms. I'm satisfied to call it that he lost his contract with his loss of form last year. My point about the call to "play the young 'uns" is that 2 years ago, Palmer was the young 'un we called for. If you think Palmer lacked heart and desire, then that call doesn't hold true, does it? Same goes for all those that slag Moon off. It's about ability, nothing else. Palmer will have learned a lot from last season. I don't disagree that he didn't respond well to things not going well for him. I think if I were in charge, I'd have let him go too. But that doesn't mean he won't learn from it, won't come back a better player, or that we won't regret letting him go - and I definitely don't think it warrants posts celebrating his departure. He contributed to some success for us, just wish the lad luck and move on.
I think he means he wasn’t offered an improved contract. We weren’t that fussed so offered to keep him on a relatively low salary thinking he may kick on with a new coach but not sure if he gets a better offer good luck to him. If he had improved last season I think we would have made a serious attempt to keep him with an improved offer. Same I think goes for Victor if we can have him cheap we may as well but if he can do better elsewhere we will wish him all the best
Good luck to him , not sure what Turkish second division is like but at least the weather will be better , as someone else said there’s a player in him somewhere but fell foul to the squad malaise last season
https://www.goztepe.org.tr/Haberler/futbol/romal-palmer-goztepemizde/9035 He's signed a four year contract with them which is good security for him to push on. They have a really good stadium too with the corners filled in to keep crowd noise in.
To be fair Mick nearly all their attitudes last season were pathetic. I would argue only Morris and Collins had any real fight or desire in them. But Palmer was definitely a scapegoat, along with Vic and the rarely-spotted Oduor. But then bizarrely you also had the 'come and sit up here Woodrow' club. This is something that as a fanbase we need to stop doing. We need to get back to winning and losing together. I think Duff can change the culture and make this happen.
