This is what annoyed me from the anti brexit lot.
Barnsley as benefitted hugely from the EU but they largely said nothing ! They should have been banging on doors explaining this to voters.

The great irony is that the areas which benefited most from being inside the EU had the highest percentage of people wanting to get out of it.

Ah, those sunlit uplands. Still, at least I can now get a pint glass with a crown symbol on it, get my fruit and veg in pounds and ounces and when I go through the Dartford tunnel I can see the emergency exit signs in yards rather than metres. The Brexit benefits are seemingly endless, especially as all those things could have been done anyway prior to Brexit :mad:

I think you'll find such things were badged as "project fear" by the "brexit lot".

I believe we are still paying in quite a considerable sum, we just aren’t getting any of it back now. It’s all part of the brilliant deal that our esteemed leaders negotiated with the EU. It must have been brilliant, because Boris said it was and he never lies.

The data was there. The information was there. The facts were there. The willingness to listen wasn’t. People blinded by frenzied jingoism, false promises and outright lies. Damage is done.

But you're all forgetting we now have control of our borders and all those nasty foreigners have stopped trying to sneak in to the country illegally and those that do we can send to Rwanda. oops that's not quite right either is it, ah well back to the good old days of high inflation strikes etc etc.

But that's not the hole truth tho is it..
The EU has an entity as got f'cuk all money, like our own government.. The only money it has is by member country's paying in via their own populations taxes. Some countries pay in more than than others. They are called the net contributers, they take out less than they put in. The UK was one of those..
Some countries don't put any money in but get handouts, that's how they get them to join the club. The next being Ukraine.
So when we were *hugely benefiting* from the EU.. it was simply our own money coming back with an EU flag on it.

Barnsley would never have seen any of that so called own money. They spunk it all on their own conservative controlled boroughs.

I said it many times. Brexit would be ok if we had a government prepared to invest in making our country competitive and self sufficient. I don’t need to say much more generally but here is one of many examples. One of our biggest advantages as a competitive nation was our innovation. We received the second highest funding from EU behind Germany. Now that we don’t get it where is this funding combing from? Well it isn’t, meaning another latent decline in what was one of our competitive advantages. But I guess it’s ok as we wouldn’t have enough people to drive and develop things anyway !!

In October 2021, the UK government’s Office of Budget Responsibility calculated that Brexit would cost 4% of GDP per annum over the long term. 4% of 2021 UK GDP is the equivalent of a £32bn cost per annum to the UK taxpayer. After rebates, the UK’s EU membership fee in 2018 was £13.2bn
