Doncaster is now officially a city! It’s one of eight new cities created for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-61505857
The meetings in the city caravan will be interesting, the city elders discussing profound matters whilst stripping gearboxes.
its got a minster , can be called by the sea ( the don is tidal upto donny) and always was a county borough, but got to admit even though i was born and raised there its ok for a fracture but i would hate to be terminal there
I think it’s the fourth time they’ve applied in my lifetime. Personally I don’t get it? Can’t see what difference it makes to anything. it’s a decent size town with quite an extensive borough with brilliant transport links (why I moved back here), city status doesn’t mean more people live here, or the shops are better.
Reminded me of a conversation I had with Donny supporting work colleagues quite a few years ago. At that time they already had the satisfaction of beating us regular on the pitch, but one of them came out with ‘wait until we’re a City, you can get ready then’ to which I replied ‘what difference will that make in both football terms and everyday life? ‘You’re just jealous’ came the reply. I then pointed out that BMBC had supported their bid for City status, and That I really didn’t know what difference it would make to them, and neither could I see it being detrimental to us. Strange lot those Donny fans were. Really had a chip on their shoulder when it came to us

I really don't get why the financial rise occurs just because you become a city?!? Might be been a bit fick like but just dunt get it.
It deserves it for its Council’s Twitter account alone. I don’t live there and never have but I’m a follower.
I think being a city gets you access to different (new) money streams and also it just looks better when advertising tourism (I know, I know) and business - move to the city or move to the town? It makes a lot of sense. Also, for example, Chelmsford in Essex was made a city back in 2012 and its roughly the same size as Doncaster. So it should really be a city as well imho.
