When the discussion dies, the personal abuse commences.

But at least you're right - I am an idiot. Wife says so at least once a day.

Your right Helen it does but my point is it’s been abandoned by the referee ten seconds on as with most minute silences at football games other than remembrance one .
My point is applause allows respect to be shown without the negative headlines from a very small minority in a very big crowd .
Better some respect shown some way without giving in to the idiots .

Maybe. But there were a lot of good at taking the knee, folk saying it should stop because of the idiots but the players didn't give way and now the applause outweighs the boos.

Well when someone replies the way you have you deserve your idiot status , I agree with your wife and pass my commiserations on to her .

I’m not making an excuse, just simply pointing out that applause seems to be the most common way of showing respect nowadays and because of that then it doesn’t follow that it’s not doing ‘what’s right’

I take your point but silence was asked for, not applause.

No that’s different Helen , it couldn’t be spoiled by people breaking the silence like a silence can.
As I said I’m not saying don’t do it I’m saying do the alternative which by the way is already being used . Applause is not a new phenomenon

I get that as well but I’ve been in Oakwell and seen in other grounds when applause was requested but spontaneous applause followed.

True, if that had happened though I'm sure it wouldn't have been viewed the same way as boos.

Well, I'd have done the minute as a ref and despite the boos, I think as a Liverpool fan ( or indeed as a reasonable neutral or Man city fan) I could have reflected in the tragic events at Hillsborough.

But it’s time after time the minutes silence other than remembrance is abused .
And time after time it’s a tiny minority who because the majority are silent gives them a massive platform to Cnuts and maximum exposure .
Time and time again the minority shine through because of the nature of the respect .
Imo if I give a minutes applause I’ve paid my respects and the minority haven’t had their headlines and everyone coming out of the ground aren’t talking about the idiots and the opposition fans being tarred with the same brush , which is what happens

I'd like to be able to sit with a pint in my seat at Oakwell (like civilised rugby union supporters do) but I can't due to the idiots that you want to bow the knee to and have hold sway.

We should eliminate them from public events as swiftly as possible, get to a civil society as soon as possible, so that the silent tolerant -but-had-enough majority can cut this cancerous crap out.

The wife agrees with this , subject to Sauvignon Blanc being behind whatever bar is still working at the well, and someone to dish it out.

But I can pass on my respects which is what the intention is by my applause just as much as any silence .
This bypasses the idiots and achieves my aim instead of it being cut short or halted .
Your trying to defend the indefensible , the spoilers win every time even one can spoil a minutes silence .
I want to pass on my respects without the negativity and feeling of anger , not change society with stares and scowls .
Applaud for one minute whilst reflecting on why I’m doing It is respects paid as far as I’m concerned and no drink , drugged up disrespectful turd has been able to spoil it .
As far as having a drink in your seat, good luck with that one can’t think of any alternatives .

I’m just fed up of not being able to show my respects because of drunken / drugged up scroats , can’t spoil it if I’m applauding imo . I just cringe sometimes st minutes silence waiting for the one or two cnuts to spoil it .

Let's all clap at funerals. By the graveside.
Let's all clap everywhere else, as a sign of respect.
Because we can't do silence and reflective thought anymore.
Just in case a ne'er do well turns up.
Let's dispose of that time when we do genuinely remember/reflect on who we've lost. When there's silence.
I'm happy for the majority, as they always thankfully do, to try and shut those up who are disrespectful when it comes to a minutes' silence. That they do try and shut them up, and that it most times works, comforts me and I think others too.
At Oakwell we seem to be most respectful and we shut up those who aren't.
No need to change this. Silence is powerful and it may seem religious but it is far better than a clap.

That’s totally irrelevant to the point I’m making and nothing to do with the subject .
Are you so bereft of debate that you’re having to dig another hole ?
Other than the remembrance either some home fans or away have spoiled the minutes silence with boos ringing out from stands against the culprits or threats and shout ms in between .
You seem to be painting a picture I don’t recognise and revelling in the what you think has happened or would like to happen but that’s not the reality .
And more to the point I’m making is applause does away with all the whataboutery and wondering if it’ll be observed or not .

I'm not so bereft of debate that I simply call someone an idiot.

You think that because idiots (like me) might spoil a tribute, we ought to clap instead.

    I don't.

    That's about it.

I don’t call you an idiot lightly , it was a well thought out and deserved analogy .
End of season most fans clap as the names of their recently deceased names are read out or posted on the score boards ( if they’re lucky to have one that works that is ) .
Scenes on television of fans with tears on their cheeks as they are clapping do obviously some clubs think it’s a good idea.
