Can’t find the full article as it was on the Athletic subscription. What’s occurring? Or is it an old story?
can only find this: https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/b...collision-course-amid-threat-of-legal-action/
Thing is Helen, these sort of things can galvanise the Reading players, which if they went on a run of results could backfire on us.
Wish we wouldn't do stuff like this. Is this is what it has come to that we have to just try and grass teams up to EFL to stay up.
I suppose the headlines make it look more interesting than "Barnsley write to the EFL". Wasting our time though. Their 6 point deduction relates to what they did in previous seasons, as does Derby's 9 points. So we can't have our cake and eat it. Until there's a real time monitoring and enforcement of FFP, or at least same season monitoring, then this will keep happening.
Can we even afford more legal action? We're going to get to a point where legal costs start to outstrip players wages...
Interestingly, I wish we'd do more of it. The only concern is the cost of legal action to a club like ours with so little money, but the rules around financial fair play are wrong. If clubs trying to stay within the rules were less passive, and I don't just mean us, then maybe football wouldn't have turned in to the monster it has become. I doubt this will do anything but it makes total sense to be following Wycombe's lead.
You are joking aren't you. ? Or are you happy to sit back and let those who smash (not beat) the rules. Win. (Paying players wagers over and above turnover. Trying to buy their way to the prem.) We have every right to ensure it's a level playing field where we all abide by the rules. It's about time some of these so called big clubs suffered the same fate as Bury for example. Pi55 takers spring to mind.
No, but we can afford to write a letter to the EFL, which is effectively all we've done. EFL have set a precedent by forcing Derby's admins to reach an agreement with Boro and Wycombe.
The optics would look better if we'd have done this at the start of the season. Just put in some decent performances and try and win some games. Litigating after performances like Saturday just looks desperate, albeit justified.
The FFP rules are wrong 100% but just us moaning about it isn't going to help you'd need the backing of the majority of the league to make a serious difference and we aren't going to get that. Us reporting teams when we are in the position we are in just looks petty IMO. We woudn't need to do this if we weren't so bad. We also weren't so interested in doing this last season when we were no where near the drop. Doing this now is just embarrassing.
To be fair, they didn't pay of a coach and sign three new players at the start of the season. I've just seen the reference to last years' accounts as well, which were not known at the start of the season. Nothing will come of it though. Boro wrote to the EFL years ago about Derby and nothing happened till this season.
As are some of the replies in this thread. Put to one side your perceived issues with the club and yes, accept that we ourselves are not exactly whiter than white and posted a loss in the annual accounts. But clubs like Reading, Cardiff, Stoke (just three off the top of my shiny head) are hundreds of millions of pounds in debt. Not one of those three are storied, big clubs with a huge fanbase. They are - no offence - bang average clubs in the grand scheme of things. I’m not saying we are anything special here. Far from it. But football is completely f*****. If, as the governing body, the EFL, want to control spending, to make sure clubs comply with its regulations and - long-term - try to help maintain the future of clubs that the fans adore, then far more needs doing. “You are carrying £100,000,000 of debt, posting losses of £50,000,000 for the last financial year? That’s naughty. Here’s a six point deduction.” That’s one hell of a deterrent is that. The rules do eventually hurt clubs though. But not in a good way. Derby being the case in point. They’ve ended up in administration. So how helpful are the EFL and their rules? Not much by the looks of it. Why not set spending limits, caps on salaries etc? One rule for every club regardless of income? An actual level playing field? Reason that won’t happen is the number of clubs who want change are in the minority. A tiny one. American sport is miles ahead of us in this regard. So f*** Reading. And f*** Stoke tomorrow night too. With Mario Vrancic in midfield. Steve Fletcher on the bench. Joe Allen earning more than our XI combined. No sympathy. And we are bang on in terms of asking questions of the EFL and its governance.
Not at all. What is this going to achieve apart from making us look like desperate idiots trying to avoid the drop by grassing on others. We didn't see any reports linking us to things like this last season when we were decent. But now we are awful and set to drop we are trying to sneak out of it again.
