Just let that sink in - with five days of January still to go. Without changes, League One will be a struggle next season.
The owners do care. They care about money, success on the field and fan engagement are all secondary. They will know by now that relegation is virtually inevitable, they have very little, if any cash left to play with and their big concern will be how they can reduce the wage bill and bring in funds through player sales. They have already said that they will not use their own money and raising debt against a business with rapidly depreciating assets is difficult and comes at a significant price. In the first division ‘seasonal pass’ income takes on greater importance as it becomes a much larger part of the club’s income with the reduction in central distribution payments. With some fans walking away after years of support the financial picture does not look good. We may not be in debt but with an owner committed to zero funding the position off the field looks just as bleak as that on it. For all the hassle involved these multi billionaire investors are really making a hash of their £7.2m investment.
