History shows that unlike the popular theory that the club are taking "The cheap option " should be replaced by the club are taking " The successful route option " which is born out of our history over the last 40 years at our club , in that time we have been promoted 5 times & on 4 of those occasions promotion was achieved under the stewardship of a HC/ Manager who had been promoted from within the club with the only exception being the most recent under Daniel Stendel , prior to that occasion Paul Heckingbottom was in charge when we beat Millwall to go to the championship , the time before was Andy Ritchie who also achieved promotion to the championship & of course our highest achievement was under Danny Wilson when we reached the promised land with Norman Hunter being the fourth manager to achieve promotion when he took us from the wilderness we had been in for donkies years to return us to the old second division. I am not suggesting that we should rush in with our next appointment & immediately promote Joe but what I am saying is that it has certainly proved to be our most successful route in the past & we may not have to look further than Oakwell to find the next incumbent although it never seems a popular move by the fans , we will see.
As I've said previously, if he can get the players who were with us last year playing back to their normal abilities then he should be given a good go at it in my opinion. See what the next few games have in store perhaps.
I hate the phrase 'taking the cheap option' because a club, any club, aren't appointing a particular person because they're 'cheap'. They genuinely think that they're the best option on the budget available. Don't get me wrong, there's available managers out there that we simply won't bring in because they're too expensive (Chris Wilder for example), but that doesn't mean we're taking the cheap option. Sometimes managerial appointments work out, sometimes they don't, but never does a club appoint someone who they expect to fail, regardless of the amount they're being paid.
Whilst I agree entirely with the OP. It doesn’t always work Hodges for example and I never really thought Simon Davey was a success despite one cup run. I’d still say our most inspired appointment in my time was Allan Clarke. So it can work both ways. I’d certainly have no problem though if they decided to give Laumann a go. Though we need to wait more than one game before deciding
I agree with you , thats why I highlighted the "Cheap option" issue, it really winds me up & its the same when we sign a player on a so called free or a loan , all transfers cost money but the club get the cheap option comment aimed usually as a form of criticism which is really unfounded .
However good/bad/indifferent JL turns out to be at football management, the step-up in passion, involvement & interaction with the players speaks volumes for me. The reaction to the goals, his movement on the touchline and bonding with the players was very like Ismael. The players clearly have a lot of time for him. He'll do for me.
I agree to an extent with what you're saying in that they don't expect them to fail but I think if the board feels they could get away with employing Laumann and he will do another Struber over employing a reasonably known and relatively inexpensive other manager with more experience which might be a safer bet then I think they will go for the former. I'm not sure the bigger picture is necessarily being seen i.e. yes we might just scrape it but if we don't we end up losing 6 million quid. I've not seen any evidence to suggest they wouldn't always go with the cheaper option. Saying that, there is nothing to say an experienced mamager wouldn't still take us down. If it works out over the next couple of games I'd love to see him get the job.
You have a very valid point but we have set countless managers from outside the club & there has only been one success promotion wise in forty years & yes it can work both ways however the stats clearly favour an appointment from within has been the most successful , I also said in my OP that we should not rush in to making any appointment which ever way they go .
I liked the days of appointing player managers. The buzz of Allan Clarke and then Norman Hunter was off the scale at the time.Unfortunately I don't think those days will happen again because players no longer are prepared to drop there income.
Win today and he'll be in a good position for the job but I'd rather see him in the caretaker roll for longer before making any commitment. If we'd lost to Derby there wouldn't even be any thoughts of him becoming permanent manager.
Definitely agree with that. Absolutely no need to rush, but as I mentioned earlier this week in another thread, win today and he'll definitely have earned the right to a few more games.
All Laumann needs to do is to put in an application for the job. If he comes out at interview as the strongest candidate, then he gets the job. If he doesn't, he stays where he is, hopefully. It sounds as though he hasn't applied and is waiting to be called, which might not happen and the board might interpret as indifference. Get your application in, Joe!! Do it tonight after another three points and wait to see. He is bound to be interviewed, but he won't be if he doesn't apply. I am a firm believer in a rigorous and robust application and interview process to identify the best applicants. The only way to sort out who is best from those who express an interest.
I thought this morning that the ground was being prepared actully. Artical in the YP saying JL is from the coal mining area of Germany.
With this being the last game before a two week break. Next week would be the ideal time to bring a new coach in. Would give him a good week maybe more to get to know the players before the first game. And also enought time to look at the squad before the transfer window.. I wouldn't want the half in half out, shall we shan't we, let's give him a bit more time and see... There is still enough of the season left to save ourselves, so make a decision next week please, whether it be JL or whoever... so we know which direction we are .moving in.
I think to change the narrative we need a more inspirational appointment. People are pretty pissed off and down on the club (quite rightly) and the owners need to flip that.
If we win today there’s gonna be obvious clamour for him to be given the job - even if just to the end of the season. Why risk breaking a winning recovery? That said, if we’re $hit again and get thumped, it will be ‘not good enough, derby obviously a one off’
It doesn't work every time, but Johnny Steele, Norman Hunter, Danny Wilson, Andy Ritchie & Paul Heckingbottom all won promotion for the club after being appointed from within. I don't know whether Laumann will get the job. However, that doesn't automatically mean he can't do it, simply because he comes from the current coaching staff.
