Continue to engage a company to supply stewards for home matches when the company cannot or will not supply enough for all areas of the ground to be fully utilised. Or is it that BFC will not pay for enough stewards and are sheilding behind the company?
Didn’t the club advertise for their own stewards a few weeks ago ? to supplement Doyle’s , they are unlikely to sack off the well known local company during a pandemic
It would be typical of the Club that Doyle Security can't supply the needed stewards (for whatever reason) but the contract is so tightly worded in favour of Doyles so the Club can't terminate the contract. Probably yet another embarrassing contractual oversight by the clubs legal team*. *this term is subject to debate
Maybe if folk wake up and realise the entire hospitality industry has the same issue, then they may realise, it’s not just BFC with the problem. They may be part of the answer, but it’s new territory…..
I'm puzzled as to why they didn't start advertising for stewards back in say the Spring knowing fans being back for the first match of the season seemed likely. What you don't do is reach then season and then decide to advertise. There is no doubting there is a stewarding problem because of the pandemic but it could have still been dealt with better.
It goes back further though doesn’t it? The previous reductions in capacity have in part been down to ‘stewarding issues’. Surely this points to us employing a contractor who can’t supply a product to the required standard, or indeed (a common problem with outsourcing) the club being unable to spec a contract properly. Either way, the current stewarding contract is not fit for purpose. Im baffled as to the current stewards in the east upper, I know it’s unlikely to kick off, but what use are a dozen teenage girls gonna be if it does?
The Sheffield united game. Shows the lack of/ availability of stewards. Just over 2k fans. Permitted. Maybe a bit of foresight in allowing united, to provide stewards from their own group, would have solved the issue. Once went to Bradford ( I think it was a Bradford game) and our own stewards were used. If both Sheffield clubs use the same company. Then it still wouldn’t be an issue, as Wendy play at home on the Saturday. Edit. Just noticed the extra tickets thread for united. Doesn’t say how many as that will be disclosed next week on their website.
Regardless of contractor, you still only have the same local pool to work with. It’s not just us with the issue, it’s widespread. As for teenagers as stewards - it’s normal. Huddersfield have always advertised at their University for stewards. Used to offer flexible arrangements and free tickets for mates after so many games worked. But they were for low risk areas - just like the East Upper. Nothing wrong with it. The higher risk areas usually have the more experienced staff on.
And I posted last week people were drinking in their seats during the game, which the girls had seen and one has spoken to them but had just been ignored by the p1ssed up idiots. I’m just glad they were sat 10 rows in front of me so I could ignore their nonsense.
I wonder how many stewards are deemed to be necessary per 1000 fans? Surely, limiting the number of fans allowed in, because the club is not prepared to pay the kind of wage which would attract a lot more stewards, is a false economy. In the case of the Sheffield United game, 1000 extra away fans could bring in ca. £30,000. 20 stewards at £100 each would cost £2000. Even 40 would only cost £4000. It doesn't require a mathematical genius to work out that it would surely pay the club to increase stewards' wages significantly, to such an extent that there would be no recruitment problem.
I appreciate that the current problem isn’t just with us. But our problems with stewarding didn’t just start this year. We’ve been suffering from problems caused by the stewards for years.
I will still never know how or why we went with the same company again after the Stoke farce. Especially when our new safety officer previously worked at a different stewarding company who have just signed a big contract with Rotherham providing enough stewards that their away end holds more than ours in the league below.
The club doesn't get interns. Interns get the club. They're the ones benefiting remember, the club is doing an amazing thing allowing them to work for free
