Hourihane

Been mooching around Twitter and seen a few folk reckoning we could be close to resigning Hourihane.

Surely wages would kibosh that straight away, wouldn't it?

For the record, I wouldn't be against him coming back but I just don't see the point...

I think an older head is precisely what this team needs having lost Mowatt and Sollbauer. Ironic James would likely have excelled now.

Depends which Hourihane we signed. If it's the Hourihane who left us in January 2017, I very much see the point. If it's that other bloke called Hourihane who bumbled around Swansea' s midfield at the tail end of last season - forget it.

Worth it for set piece delivery alone.

Basically this. Plus I think his experience would be invaluable.

Ok. So experience. But what about his wages? If we couldn't afford to keep Mowatt how could we sign Hourihane?

I doubt that Villa believe they will get someone to cover his full wages. I’m pretty sure Swansea didn’t.

On loan with Villa making a large contribution to his wages? It's not that outlandish.

I wasn't a fan of Sollbauer as a player last season, but he was experienced and that experience rubs off. Matty James too will have been good to have around the younger players in games and in training. We've more experience than the crazy transfer window as we've brought in a few mid 20 year old players, but we look shy of experience in the middle.

We afforded Matty James thanks to subsidy. And he was supposedly earning wages that make Hourihanes look paltry.

I agree with that but sol was on a decent crack in terms of wages so can't have a player on so much to not play. I'd be happy to see conor back we really need the 2 belgium strikers in ASAP and hopefully we start scoring.

It would be an absolute no brainer if there was any possibility

Absolutely, i can understand Sollbauer going. Was just an observation we've lost experience through those two players, so bringing in something more experienced, even if just short term should be a positive move.

The Conor Hourihane playing for us this season would be a totally different player to that one at Swansea last season. He would be coming home, maybe with a view to moving onto the coaching staff here in a couple of years. He would be welcomed back very warmly by most of us and I think he would respond accordingly.

Our one loan only allowance is still available, could do worse and I do think he still has the love for our club. (I’m a soppy sod really)

We wont get the MKI version who took a while to settle but became a great player. We would get the MKII version, less mobile, more experience and knowledge. The MKII might give us more of what we want as i would see a MKI being a permanent target type of player. Would help the younger players develop, add leadership and bring a bit more off the shelf quality. I think a loan tlll the next transfer window would work for everyone as long as Villa favored the deal with help on wages.

Yes, I hadn't thought about that angle but it might work very well. Cauley is not the right man for the job at the moment and I am sure it is affecting his playing, just like it does in cricket when your best batsman becomes skipper and then stops scoring.
