I kind of understand the weak side that Schopp put out in a way but surely he ought to have had a stronger bench? From what I gather we got worse when we brought on the subs. We needed some of our better players on there to try and win the game in the last 20 minutes or so. The ironic thing is that now we're out of the League Cup there's no more opportunity to give fringe players a game....
Might not need to? That might have been the last thing Schopp needed to see before he settles on the system and personnel.
I finished watching the Saturdays full game this morning and just watched the very short extended highlights and interviews. There are a couple of things that should be evident. Schopp is new to England, has inherited a coaching team he doesn't know and has had a pretty short period to work with new players he's just encountered for the first time. Secondly, we've signed some players pretty late and have had a number of injuries which have meant he's not had all the players he wanted at his disposal. On Saturday we played some really nice stuff and created some good chances. We also had some good chances against us, but a point was probably fair. From the extended highlights, we've created some great chances. Miller put in a couple of really good crosses, as did Williams, and Adeboyejo and Oduor really should have got a least one each. As it was, the game was a draw. We kept a clean sheet. Valuable minutes for players coming back from injury and perhaps more important, gives a breather for some of our players ahead of the Coventry game which is far more important. Let's have patience. We're playing a new style and without all the players he'd like to have fit and up to speed. I'm certainly not going to burst blood vessels after an away draw against an improving team in a competition very few people care a jot about.
I'll say it again, there were one or two players in last night's team who didn't need a chance to show what they can do. They have been here long enough for that to be clearly on record. I don't for a second agree with treating last night's game as a friendly but once that decision had been made then it would have been better to see all the experimental picks go to players who haven't yet had the chance to prove themselves or, like Moon are on an upward trajectory.
Maybe adding a couple of players into the fold to take a look while maintaining a solid side to ensure our passage to the next round would have been a better ploy instead of what we got. If he had he could maybe have used more games to get players game time going forwards. Also much needed revenue opportunities down the drain.
