Italian player yards offside but play goes on for 20 or 30 seconds until an Austrian player gets the ball and the flag goes up. Wtf and I really mean wtf, is the point behind all this? Offside is offside. So much unnecessary meddling by those who think they know best. Along with var the game is f.u.cked.
I'm totally with you mate. The whole rule needs rethinking and simplifying. On ESPN they keep going to Clattenburg for an explanation, and he differs about 50% of the time with the actual decision. As for the offside rule and VAR; don't get me started. You shouldn't need a micrometer to make a decision.
Think how much potential time is wasted allowing play to continue, dont get it at all. Bad enough keepers taking 30 seconds to release the ball. But offside is offside, if it's obvious the flag should go up immediately!
Right then, pay attention. If a player is in-between the goal keeper & the last forward player........no, hold on. If the forward player is in front or between the last player & the goal line.....no that's not right. Reight then, if the defender & the forward player is on the same line as the goalkeeper then it's offside, I think, is it? No I've got it. The last player on the pitch at afe time cannot be within 15 yards of the last defender when the ball is still rolling or airborne at the time it's being inflated at the factory of production. No that's boll0x If a player stands in front of all the other defending players coz he's talking to the opposing keeper(there mates) then he's offside, as long as the linesman puts his flag up or keeps it down, who the chuff knows? Over to you V.A.R.
They won't change this stupid rule until somebody makes an unnecessary challenge and someone gets seriously injured through allowing play to continue when the flag should go up straight away for offside
Didn't understand why it took Stuart Atwell so long to call the Austria goal offside. It wasn't even marginal. Pretty clear to see in real time with the naked eye.
I think we are seeing that English officials have become pretty poor compared with the majority of their continental cousins. They seem too frightened to come to a conclusion when the video evidence is conclusive. On the pitch they fall for virtually ever bit of simulation premier players get up to for fear of sticking their head above the parapet. Becoming totally professional was supposed to improve the, but it's just as likely it's made them over cautious of losing their job.
Not so sure about the second assertion. On the pitch last night, towards the end of the game, Italy threw themselves down several times trying to slow the game as Austria did their all to get back into it and they were all waved away. I have been quite impressed with the standard of refereeing in this tournament so far, including the games the English guys have had. But the VAR calls were very slow last night - only complaint I have. As soon as the goal was replayed and the frame frozen at the offside, it was clear to everyone he was off, it didn't even need lines drawing to see that. The decision took a stupidly long time to confirm.
You’ve got to admit that the rule as it is makes the linesman’s job easier, I mean if nobody knows what the hells happening how can you criticise them!
Agree the English refs have been better picking up on simulation during this competition, but feel that's only because there's been some sort of edict from UEFA. That's the standard they are being assessed on. Let's see if they carry this back into the premier league. Hope so
