the group B table shows Russia and Finland on 3 points each Russia have a -2 Goal difference and Finland have 0 goal difference. So how come Russia are above Finland ? https://www.skysports.com/euro-2020-table
I thought that, but goal difference must be first tie breaker as Denmark finished 2nd Finland 3rd and Russia 4th when all have 3 points, and Finland beat Denmark and Russia beat Finland!?
Poor rule that. Goal difference what you did over three matches should always be above what you did in a one off match.
Head to head record still applies first, but it has to be judged across all 3 teams on equal points. In this case, think of it as a mini-group of 3 teams. All have equal points in the H2H, so goal difference is the next factor used to split them.
and Denmark beat Russia. So in the "group of 3" on 3 points, they have 1 win and 1 defeat. So it then goes to goal difference, which Denmark win - so they are 2nd
1. Head-to-Head record between teams tied 2. Superior Goal Difference between teams tied* 3. Higher number of Goals Scored between teams tied* 4. Superior Goal Difference in all group matches 5. Higher number of Goals Scored in all group matches 6. Higher number of Wins in all group matches 7. If after 1-6 is applied and two teams are still level, and they face each other in final group game, then a penalty shoot-out between the two sides will determine who finishes higher 8. If after 1-6 is applied and two teams are still level but don't face each other in final group game then whoever has the lowest disciplinary points in all group games will determine who finishes higher 9. Higher position in European Qualifiers overall ranking *rules 2 and 3 only applies when at least three teams are tied - if just two teams are tied and they have an identical head-to-head (ie, they drew their group game) then goal difference and goals scored between the two sides will be identical also
it was edit.... presume you meant in general? think h2h in internationals as been used as a 1st option for a while
also in such a case of not many games to play, goal dif can be unreliable too you could argue italy took the foot off the gas, it may have ended up 3-0 instead of 1-0 if they had not rested their 2 goal scorers from previous game, thus the swiss finishing 2nd instead we must have all scenarios covered before the tournament, which they have how many knew the set up with us winning the cricket world cup? don't think many did, but the rules were set out prior
Fair enough lol... I guess I'm an old traditionalist, but can see what you're saying buddy. *nods head in acknowledgement*
they could do rock paper scissors for me, as long as all know the set up before ;-) you can find a fault with almost every way to decide the outcome
