In the Orion Nebula, top left shoulder(I think) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-57501416
Can't really comprehend the size of space, the observable universe would take 100s or thousands of years to get from the two furthest points, and what we can see( the observable bit) is only ( apparently) a pin ***** and the rest is the size of the USA, just can't get my head around it and I don't think we have the mental capacity to fully understand it, I've watched the you tube clip where it compares suns/ star sizes and our sun is miniscule in comparison to some absolute giants out there.
I think the furthest galaxy we have observed is around 15 billion light years away & is travelling away at rate that is faster than the speed of light, apparently. I did watch a programme about 2 weeks ago and one scientist quoted: " we are being misinformed when we are told nothing can travel faster than the speed of light" https://www.forbes.com/sites/starts...-at-faster-than-light-speeds/?sh=1acd30572a21.
If you have Netflix, check out ‘The Edge of All We Know’. It’s about the recent project which took the first ever images of a black hole. Just mind boggling - and that’s dumbed down for Netflix
It is said, but how they know is beyond me, that there are more stars, planets and the rest in the universe than there are grains of sand on earth. Just pick up a handful of sand on the beach and start counting .....
10s of billions of Galaxies containing 10s of billions of stars & planets, it's Sheff Weds.....a mean MASSIVE.
It does take some getting your head around this, but it also puts things into perspective, we are a very unimportant world amongst billions, doing our best to destroy ourselves. It might be the only inhabited planet in the universe or there might be millions, but we haven't got the technology to reach them. So crack on killing the environment of this planet in the pursuit of profit, and letting half the planet starve whilst doing so. Where are you aliens when we need you?
Try googling Scale of the Universe 2, but not on a phone just yet, it was on flash and it don't work properly. There's a YouTube link of it below but you can't zoom in and out like the pc one.
