I just never understand us taking injured players to major finals. Greaves, Keegan, Robson, Gascoigne, Rooney........ we've almost made it a tradition. Henderson. Good player but not exactly a talisman and nowhere near match fit, let alone major finals fit.
Normally I’d be dead against taking anyone not 100% fit but with 3 extra squad places I’ve got no issues with Henderson & Maguire going. They’re the only two natural leaders in the squad in my opinion. Anyone who’s watched Liverpool or Man Utd with & without these two players will know how much of a difference they make. I think taking them both is a gamble worth taking. No issue with Lingard playing tonight either. He’s playing as an attacking midfielder so what’s the alternative? Playing Phillips as a number 10 or shoe horning Calvert-Lewin or Watkins into midfield? That would make even less sense to me. I think we’re missing 12 of the 26 with no Man City, Man Utd or Chelsea players involved. It only leaves 14 in the Euro’s squad available & 2 of them are keepers. With Covid & a hectic season there’s more chance of the back ups been required too. So Lingard’s got a decent chance of making the squad. I imagine him or Ward-Prowse will be getting a call to replace Trent now.
I don’t make the rules. I’m sure there’s some medical experts somewhere saying they could do with a few extra days off.
What’s peoples thoughts on Mings? I think he’s very lucky to get in the squad & is only in because he’s left footed. I think his partner at Villa Konsa is better, I’d also take Tomori, White, Godfrey, Holgate, Tarkowski & Smalling all ahead of him.
