Well it won't be a legal requirement but I don't see businesses deciding off their own accord to see proof when they don't have to. It would be a rare good decision by the government. The vaccine take up is high, so there is no need for it. Especially when plenty in society for one reason or another do not want vaccine or cannot have a vaccine.

 

What about for international travel though? I've been vaccinated but under current circumstances still need three covid tests to travel to the UK (one before leaving and two on arrival). Multiply that by three for the whole family and the costs start to become ludicrous. Especially as someone is raking it in by charging £90 a test in the UK (it's under £20 in Russia for the same test).

 

I thought Vaccine Passports were definitely, definitely, definitely, definitely happening and that we'd all need one to go to the shop for a pint of milk?

 

That was never going to happen. I think they are worried about people power though. The day before this story came out London had a huge crowd for the anti lockdown protest and they know if they brought this in they would end up with protests all over the country. It being down to individual businesses if they choose to want to see your status will be interesting to see how many ask for it. But at least it won't be mandatory and hopefully our own club come out and say they won't be asking to see the status of anyone.

 

Nah, they‘ll just come up with a catchy ( irksome) 3 word slogan, tell a few lies, get their media backing friends to justify it, cry ‘ but Labour’ and the public will swallow it as per

 

The rip off nature of that made me very angry when I came back from Spain at the end of March. €110 for the test over there and £180 for two tests at home. Test one arrived two days late; test two never arrived at all. I managed to get a free test package locally to keep me “legal”. I hope people are prosecuted for this scam when it all comes out.

Exactly. I know that labour costs and premises are cheaper in Russia, but not to the tune of five times. It absolutely stinks. Turkey also doing tests in the airport for €20.

 

Well I was pretty shocked when my local clinic (in Spain that is) quoted 110 euros but that was for a PCR. I was under the impression that the Antigen (cheaper) one may not be accepted by UK Border Force so didn't want to risk being turned back and wasting more money.

What the situation is now I have no idea but we have a Polish trip planned for the end of this month and then I may be off to my Spanish property again in July seeing as I have had my three months back here period, under the new rules. If I do go my first port of call will be the estate agent to put the house on the market. The situation over the last year has scuppered the "Spanish Dream" for me, and plenty of others no doubt. The thousands of swallows who fly south for the whole winter cannot do that now (good old Brexit ). I just hope that I don't end up losing a load of money on the deal.

 

The best part is that so many of those swallows voted for Brexit in the first place because they were too full of their own self importance to realise it would negatively impact them. Didn't even cross their mind that they're no different to immigrants coming the other way

 

You can't say that for sure though can you, seeing as you don't know all these people personally. Also, I don't think it's fair to compare people, admittedly very well off some of them, who own an expensive property on one of the Costas, alongside their UK property, with poor immigrants heading north for economic reasons (ie to sponge off the UK benefits system).

Despite having a house there I am a "non-resident" because, up to now, it has suited us to be that way. We pay non-residents tax, council taxes (two separate parts) and generally contribute to the local economies in the usual way. I'd wager that everyone in a similar situation does the same. I've no desire to live full time in Spain and, even if I did, the costs of obtaining Residencia are eye-watering now. The level of income you have to show has increased considerably so the simplistic views expressed by those on A Place in the Sun are totally irrelevant now.

I'm not looking for sympathy here. Just asking you not to tar everyone with your patronising brush.

 

I didn't tar everyone. I said so many of them not all of them. And yes I can say that for sure because I know some of them who did exactly as I said and voted for Brexit despite the fact that they used freedom of movement to benefit themselves. Too thick to realise that it would stop once they got their wishes.

I'm not including you in any of that because I have no idea which way you voted. If anything your original post ('thanks brexit') suggested you voted against it, in which case you do have my upmost sympathy even if you weren't asking for it. There are many people who will suffer because of the decision to leave and each and every one has my sympathy. The idiots who voted for it however have none.

 

My in-laws lived for 6 months a year in Spain, used to go over winter. Year before Brexit vote they sold their villa in spain and then without any hint of shame voted Brexit, so other people wouldn’t be able to do exactly what they did, unbelievable.

 

They got in just in time then. I think it will be very hard to sell anything for a while. I would be a reluctant seller but not much choice now

 

Meanwhile, infections have risen since the 17 May opening up stage, and 21 June unlocking is now in doubt.

 

Isn't there a demand from other northern Europeans?

 

Of course but the lack of British buyers will be significant. Where my place is, three miles from Torrevieja, there are plenty of Scandinavians and Central Europeans, but if the British start flooding the market prices will sink inevitably.

 

Only reason not to press ahead on June 21st would be if the vaccines don't work.

 

Isn’t the fear that the first dose of the vaccine doesn’t offer as much protection against this latest variant? Which means less level of protection than they thought there would be when the so called roadmap was announced
