for me I would start extra time with no offsides and remove a player from each team every 5 minutes, first goal wins ,least this would still involve the actual game of football to decide the winner, not a player having to take a penalty who plays in goal
Got to have offsides for me, otherwise teams will just ‘goal rake’ by leaving players stood on the line. Having said that, I quite like the thrill of the penalty shoot out even if I am English
Not for me tbh , we’d end up with five players on a massive pitch blowing out of their arses and not resembling any sort of football match . Don’t know ow you could see last nights drama as a reason to stop pens? It’s was thrilling imo as a neutral and if you win.
Why not have nominated penalty takers that take the penalties? Still best of five with sudden death but the same five penalty takers. At least then you'd have players that wanted to take penalties taking the kicks. If they miss, those that usually take them have broader shoulders.
Remember a tournament a few years ago - cant remember if it was the World or European cup when they played next goal winner, or Golden goal as it was called - it wasnt a great success for some reason - Penalty shootouts are here to stay because of the drama they create - that was lost with the golden goal format
Was there supposed to be a limit on touches and where the player strikes the ball and how far the goalkeeper could come out? I think it looks amazing and fair.
There is that and although it shouldn’t be it is a factor . Although most of the social media emphasis from yesterday from a Man UTD perspective is Marcus Rashford and he scored his penalty . I know he missed an easy chance but so did Cavarni so I can’t for the life of me think why Marcus is coming under so much criticism
For the neutral I thought the shootout was superb. I never backed ‘Golden Goal’, as it didn’t give the other team a fair chance to equalise. Just end up with two teams $hit scared of conceding.
Oh well...on a personal note. I think the sports psychologist that went on about those that take it how you said "one kick of the ball" being the best, coolest sportsman with most success is right. It's about funnelling out all the other stuff that can't effect you kicking that ball. Those that can't are those that miss. Those that think this will be the year Man Utd win the Europa League miss. Those that think I'm sticking this in the corner score.
Pretty sure the answer is yes to both of those, though I can't find the exact rules. So much better than a penalty shoot out. I have no idea why it's not been adopted.
Not much skill involved in that particular video, shocking! And why does the keeper keep putting his hand up when the player takes it round them, did the Americans used to think that meant offside?
I was thinking they had a three touch rule and the player scoring had taken too many touches or entered the box when he shouldn't?
If I remember right, the Golden goal(and there was a Silver goal at one point too) had the opposite effect to what was intended. Instead of getting both teams to go all out to get the winner, they both shut up shop and it was a turgid affair. At least with extra-time as it is now, if a team does set a goal, the other team have a chance to get back into it.
