With thanks to our Oakwell Historian @Turvey Tyke and @Dyson for their words late last night. https://bfcst.co.uk/bfcst-tribute-to-eric-winstanley-barnsley-fc-legend/
"I’m convinced he would have been transferred to the old Division One and probably made the England squad in 1966." Wow, bloody hell - that's some statement. I wish I'd been able to watch him play.
Thanks Jay. Should have remembered that considering it was local to the pub I ran 15 years ago and he called in once for a pint!
I was taken aback by this as well typing it up last night. I mean I knew Eric was really talented but I'd not appreciated just how good he was.
I could have got this wrong, but wasn't he on the cusp of a move to Tottenham (?) when he suffered his terrible injury (even more serious back then)?
Didn’t he share film of the 1969 2-2 draw with Tranmere recently? Winnie played in that game - first one back after a spell out.
Would love to know how close he was to leaving and who it was he nearly signed for. Just so I can go and look at the calibre of their squad at the time and what famous names were in it.
I've always been under the impression Tottenham were keen on signing him, managed at the time by the late, great Bill Nicholson. Eric would've partnered Mike England in the centre of defence, with Pat Jennings in goal. The midfield would've contained Dave Mackay & Alan Mullery. Up front were Alan Gilzean and Jimmy Greaves.
Tottenham was in my mind too when I was thinking about him last night. The Chronicle names both Spurs and Man United as serious suitors. This would have been around the mid sixties if memory serves.
It's also worth remembering at the time, if a football club didn't want to sell a player, he wouldn't be sold and there was nothing the player could do about it.
That's incredible. All household names even for a nipper like me. Imagine playing a cultured through ball from the back for goal hanger Jimmy Graves?
